Texas finally let Marlise Muñoz be taken off life support

A Texas state district judge has ruled that a state law was wrongly applied in the case of Marlise Muñoz, allowing her to be taken off life support. We’ve written before about Muñoz, who has been brain dead since November but was pregnant at the time of her death and was kept alive by the county-owned John Peter Smith Hospital, citing a Texas law that says they cannot withdraw “life sustaining-support… for a pregnant patient.” This decision was backed by local lawmakers, despite Muñoz’s clear wishes, expressed to her husband, not to be kept on life support.

Wendy Davis’s ex-husband thinks she would make a “very capable governor”

Remember that fake Wendy Davis “scandal”? In which Texas right wingers tried to smear Wendy for pieces of her life story in classically sexist ways? One of the accusations against her was that she had manipulated her ex-husband into helping her out with her kids while she went through school. (Imagine that! A man caring for kids!) Well, it doesn’t seem to be going great for the smear campaign. Her supposedly manipulated ex-husband isn’t quite buying the scandal either:

The harsh reality of abortion restrictions in Texas

In 2013, Texas passed extreme restrictions on abortion to shutter one third of the state’s providers. We’ve written a ton here at Feministing about the inspiring feminist army that rose up to fight these restrictions, about our hero Wendy Davis who will be the next governor of Texas and help change this horrible reality, and about the fact that despite these wins, the anti-choice establishment has already had success and likely will be able to continue in limiting access to reproductive healthcare.

Today, a federal appeals court is set to review the law again.

Fifth Circuit reinstates Texas anti-choice restrictions

Late yesterday, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals struck down Tuesday’s injunction by the lower court of Texas’ draconian anti-choice law. The three- judge panel, all appointed by President George W. Bush, granted the state’s request to reinstate the law that requires abortion providers to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital (within 30 miles) in order to provide legal abortion care. As we’ve previously covered, the Texas anti-choice law will lead to the closure of nearly one-third of Texas abortion care providers, which as Judge Yaefel noted in his decision on Tuesday, “does nothing to protect women’s health.”
