Happy birthday Mychal!

Happy birthday to our own Mychal Denzel Smith!

Mychal is one of the newest contributors here at Feministing, and we’re so excited to have his brilliant perspective on issues of race, gender, and masculinity on the blog. In addition to his consistently incisive takes on everything from Mister Cee to street harassment to Orange is the New Black, Mychal has offered some really thoughtful reflections on his role as a dude in the feminist movement. He’s grappled with the emotional work of being a male feminist, challenged the concept of “allies,” and called for men to hold each other accountable

Happy Birthday Maya!

How much do you really know about Maya Dusenbery? You make have heard that Maya’s click moment came after she realized the absurdity of abstinence-only education. You may know that she has a knack for saying so eloquently what we all need to hear about rape culture, calling out sexist double standards in advertising, and asking the hard questions. You may know that she entertains you with the Weekly Feminist GIF and keeps you informed with the Weekly Feminist Reader. Newsletter subscribers owe her errrything (A reminder that you can always use the “subscribe” tab in the right sidebar to add your email to the list – it’s underneath ...

Happy birthday Z!

Please join me in wishing our very own Zerlina a HUGE happy birthday!

I guess November is a popular month to be born a badass!

Since Z joined the team over one year ago, she’s brought her unique voice and passion for political issues as well as her prolific tweeting and we are loving every second of it. It was especially crucial to have her with us during the election, when her expertise came especially in handy.

The past year has been huge for her, as her career as a Democratic strategist, TV contributor, soon-to-be-attorney, and writer for The Daily news, Ebony, and the Grio has taken off.

We are so proud and consistently amazed by her achievements, and are sure ...

Happy Birthday Katie!

Katie Halper is one of the newest additions to the Feministing team, and I’m thrilled to celebrate her birthday today! Battling the humorless feminist stereotype once sarcastic post at a time, Katie has been lending her sharp wit and caustic sense of humor to the site for about 6 months now. A comic and filmmaker, Katie is also a kind and caring friend and colleague who’s straight shooting candor I’ve come to really value in my life. Whether she’s making hard-hitting points about the death penalty or helping me find the best hole-in-the-wall eats on the lower east side, I’m so appreciate of her contributions and glad she’s part of the team. Happy birthday Samhita!

It’s been quite a year for Samhita Mukhopadhyay, Feministing’s fierce executive editor and someone I’m proud to call a personal friend and mentor.

With her breakout book Outdated: Why Dating is Ruining Your Love Life (Seal Press) she achieved new heights, questioning the retrograde sexism, racism, and homophobia of  traditional relationship advice so often aimed at young people and receiving accolades from just about everyone, including Melissa Harris-Perry.

Her Occupy Valentine’s Day was a huge hit, generating buzz and thoughtful discussion about the romantic industrial complex and our popular notions of love.

Plus she keeps droppin knowledge on the blog, whether she’s dissecting the “Shit People Say” memeswith her own definitive take, unpacking the racial dimensions to ...

Happy Birthday Maya!

Feminist super hero Maya Dusenbery–feeding baby lambs in her down time.

This weekend was Feministing contributor Maya’s birthday. Maya is a mega-badass that continues to not only bring the quality feminist content–but she also puts together our Weekly Feminist Reader, manages our social medias, and puts out our newsletter (sign up for it—->).

She plays a really important role in keeping Feministing moving forward–not to mention being an intern at Mother Jones and just a general all round fabulous person. Her dedication to feminist bad-assery is inspiring.

So–Happy birthday Maya, cheers to another year of being the awesome!

Happy Birthday Jos!

Jos dressed up as a sexy anti-choice protestor for Halloween last year. And they say feminists aren’t funneh…

Well, it looks like we have two Feministers born this week and today is our gal Jos’s day! I recently wrote about how amazing Jos is when we announced her promotion to editor at Feministing–but I can’t really say enough about how awesome, supportive and lovely Jos is. I just spent the last two weeks hanging out with Jos in the Bay Area (her new home) and even though she can’t drive or use a GPS (we took a road trip together. we are alive. that is all.)–she is one of the most real, supportive and caring people ever. We would ...

The Wednesday Weigh In: Birthdays and aging

Yesterday I turned 25. My birthday was lovely, with friends, family, and my Feministing crew really going all out to celebrate my day of birth. It was quite humbling and made me really grateful to have these people in my life. It also, being my 25th birthday, made me think about aging and ageism.

I would never have classified myself as someone who is particularly anxious or concerned about getting older. Most of the time, I feel good about it. As I’ve gotten older, I feel I’ve become wiser, more self aware, stable, more accomplished, and even more fashionable (in the sense that I’m able to wear more of what I like instead of following so many trends). ...
