Facebook Sexism: Shame Soccer Players by calling them girls

As most folks know the Soccer World Cup is taking place in 2010. I have now been invited to Facebook Group which which states “I am taking a Pink Card to the World Cup 2010″ and is described as “Anyone who has world cup tickets, take a pink card to the game with you. If a player dives, and roles around on the ground like a girl, show him the pink card. Imagine how awesome (shameful for the player) it would be if 70,000 people said “stop acting like a Girl…Ronaldo.” “

I figure the best way to protest the blatant sexism would actually be to post a couple of Womens Soccer videos showing that they might actually want to tell the players who fake injuries to “Woman Up”

Does anyone have any links to clips of some amazingly kick-ass women’s soccer moments?

South African Pollitician and sexist comments about Rape

Words fail me….

“The ANC Youth League leader had said the woman must have had a “nice time”. Mr Zuma was acquitted of rape”

ANC’s Julius Malema found guilty of Hate Speech

This same man referred to another female pollitician as not looking like she could be married because he didn’t know a man that would want her. It’s hard to know where to start with all the things that are wrong with that statement. Wikipedia has a good article on him which covers most of ridiculous statements.

What Do You Want in a Counter-Abstinence Sex-Ed Pamphlet

The son of a friend of mine (I’ll call him Andy) informed us that his school sex-ed program, which is abstinence-only, is just around the corner. Furthermore, the group being brought in to teach the class is LifeChoices, a local pro-life "crisis pregnancy center." (http://www.lifechoices4states.org/)

Being in Missouri, abstinence ed is the norm, and I know from personal experience how lacking and destructive these programs are. Andy’s father and I belong to a local political group, and Andy himself is very smart. We are formulating plans such as letter writing and maybe even a protest.

One idea we bounced around was making a pamphlet to counter the abstinence-only stance, and giving them to the students. However, we don’t have any medical experts ...

Caster Semenya rape joke on TV

The clip is from a British TV show called “Big Fat Quiz of the Year” and this episode was aired on 1 Jan 2010. I haven’t seen any discussion on this, or anything about complaints despite the joke being in extremely bad taste.

Caster Semenya is from a country where rape is a huge problem in communities such as the one she grew up in. It is especially true for lesbian women who subjected to “corrective rape” by men.

I happened to see an article on the PinkStinks campaign in a local paper after having originally reading about it here.

I really had to share this section as I’m quite shocked that people could react so strongly to it:

"They’ve been most shocked, though, by the emails. "Do you sell campaign T-shirts in pink?" one respondent wrote. "And do you have any with ‘I am a leftwing communist loony trying to brainwash girls’?" Another calls the sisters "lesbians" who "can’t leave normal young girls alone". Is a Woman in Labor a “Person”?

I can not believe the outcome of this case. It seems to defy all logic!

Not only does it show complete lack of respect for a pregnant womans rights over her own body, it puts the baby’s life ahead of her own. I also believe I am not wrong in thinking that this sets a terrible prescident for women to be charged with a crime when they have an abortion, especially if it was late term.

Gay British Celeb dies

Stephen Gately of the boy band “Boyzone” died tragically recently. Now the Daily Mail is trying to use the fact that he is gay to assume he was basically into all kinds of things that ultimately led to his demise.
This is so completely, and utterly homophobic it’s quite astounding. For example “Gay activists are always calling for tolerance and understanding about same-sex relationships, arguing that they are just the same as heterosexual marriages. Not everyone, they say, is like George Michael.
Of course, in many cases this may be true. Yet the recent death of Kevin McGee, the former husband of Little Britain star Matt Lucas, and now the dubious events of Gately’s last night raise troubling questions ...

“Corrective Rape” against lesbians in South Africa

This is just so hideous! How can people believe this (quoted from news report)

“By raping you and giving you a penis, I will correct you so you understand your role as a woman,”

South Africa has a highly liberal constitution but more work needs to be done in educating people as to what this means to them. It also becomes difficult when (mostly men) accuse one of attacking their African culture and imposing westernisation on them, even when their culture is encouraging treating women as second rate citizens.
