Unbelievably sexist Folger’s commercial

A late 20s/early 30s, grown, adult woman comes down for breakfast with her father. Her father says “you got home late last night” and she says, “dad, I’m not 16 anymore.” She then assures him he “won’t have to worry anymore” and shows him her engagement ring.
I don’t even know where to begin. First, how many women who are the age of the woman portrayed in the commercial still live at home with their parents, waiting until they get married to move out? Perhaps she lost her job and had to move back home? Ok, but gag me with a spoon, this would imply that now that she’s got a financially stable man to marry her, she can finally move out.
Second, even if you put the question of why on earth this full-grown adult woman is still dependent on her father, or why getting enagaged would be the solution to that living situation, why would her father not have to worry about her anymore? I guess now it’s her husband’s responsibility to keep track of her.

Say Yes to…What?

I’m watching Say Yes to the Dress on TLC right now. I often watch this show and a lot of others on TLC because they give me insight to worlds that I just would never see for myself, such as people spending $30,000 on big white dresses, sexist fathers of 18 children, babies in beauty pageants, etc. So I’m going to kind of refer Rebecca Mead’s book One Perfect Day here as I comment on Say Yes to the Dress.

One thing that I absolutely hate about this "world" at Kleinfeld is that they CONSTANTLY refer to the wedding day as "the most important day of a woman’s life."

First it makes no sense for anyone to assume a wedding day is ...

The Plan B Commercial

Here’s my take and I wonder if any of you feel the same. Overall I like this commercial and its portrayal of young women faced with a reproductive problem and taking action to correct it. Furthermore it shows how simple plan B can be to obtain, take, and proceed with your day (yes, I know people who have taken it and had bad side effects, but people shouldn’t be made afraid to take it). It also makes it very clear that it’s just birth control and not any form of abortion.

But what I don’t like is that there’s a group of women waking up with the same problem- unplanned unprotected sex- and they are all young, college age-types. A problem ...

Old news but nonetheless: “dating advice”

Last night I was waiting in line at the pharmacy (to spend my $75 on prescriptions related to my female reproductive system) when I catch a glimpse of the cover of Cosmo: "Do this one thing on date #1 and he’s your’s." I couldn’t resist, I just had to see what this "one thing" was. I expected to be offended and horrified, but I just had to see.

Well, it wasn’t one thing, it was six. And they weren’t six things "to do" they were six things NOT to do. The article was written by a man, of course, though given that it was Cosmo I wouldn’t expect anything better from a women. I don’t think I remember all of them, ...

A little rant against the Travel Channel

30 second shots of the same woman’s butt in a thong over and over, a quick cut to a mountain view, back to the same woman’s butt, and then a panning shot from a woman’s butt to her boobs does not a show about travel to Hawaii make. All this channel shows is models in tiny bathing suits. Even the segments on snorkeling, diving, and hiking show (a certain type) of women in bikinis.

Patting men on the back for simple tasks

I’ve been noticing this a lot lately- grown men in relationships being praised like little children when they do something to "help" around their own houses or take care of errand/task that needs to be done between both partners.

I can see this with some older men, who may have been raised that women "take care" of things and maybe moved straight from their mother’s house to their wife’s. But the guys I’m noticing it with now are in their early 30s. They’ve lived on their own for many years and are successful at work and education. But their partners praise them for successfully going to the grocery store or calling the plumber or folding towels. I’m pretty sure they ...

Ranking women by number

Yes, men still do this. It’s part of the "game." I’ve been told that when a man "scores" a higher number, it makes him feel better about himself. So glad we’re all here to make men feel better about themselves.

This practice has always enraged me. It reminds me of a dog show. I feel like the men who do this are out there in the bars with tape measures making sure we meet the AKC requirements for head size and sheen of coat.

I have to wonder what makes one human being feel that they have the right to apply a harsh, numerical, comparitive judgement on others. The way I understand it, it seems to be applied to groups of female ...

Holiday Gender Roles

A little timely topic to discuss: is there a difference between the responsibilities of men and women during the holidays?

I’d say, "absolutely." Have you noticed that when you get a card from a couple, both signatures and the address are written in the woman’s handwriting? Have you met women who, for some inexplicable reason, do all the shopping for their husband/boyfriend’s relatives? In my family, wrapping gifts is a woman’s job. My entire life, my father has come home from last minute shopping and informed me that I have to wrap a pile of large gifts (and my mother wraps the ones for me). My father has never wrapped a present in his entire life. I’ve seen men take some ...
