Feministing Book Giveaway: Wonder Woman, by Noah Berlatsky

You’ll find many fans of Wonder Woman among the Feministing crew, which is why the last year has been a good one for our collective bookshelf: not one, but two books about the history of the woman with the lasso of truth! Today, we’re giving away copies of one of those welcome additions, Wonder Woman: Bondage and Feminism in the Marston/Peter Comics, 1941-1948, by Noah Berlatsky.

Coverflip challenge reimagines famous dude book covers as by and for women

Yesterday author Maureen Johnson, fed up with sexist responses to the perceived gender appeal of her books covers, issued a challenge to her followers. She writes:

You are informed about a book’s perceived quality through a number of ways. Probably the biggest is the cover….

And the simple fact of the matter is, if you are a female author, you are much more likely to get the package that suggests the book is of a lower perceived quality. Because it’s “girly,” which is somehow inherently different and easier on the palate. A man and a woman can write books about the same subject matter, at the same level of quality, and that woman is simple more likely ...

Win a copy of So Much Pretty by Cara Hoffman

This week, Cara Hoffman’s debut novel So Much Pretty comes out in paperback, and today, we are giving away copies of this remarkable book to five lucky Feministing readers.

I reviewed So Much Pretty last year:

… this is a book about how every one of us colludes in rape culture. It’s about how we close our eyes to it, or make excuses for it, even when it’s right there in front of us. And it’s a book about the different ways that people try to stop colluding and decide to do something, whether it’s through the career they choose, or the way they raise their children, or by writing about it honestly and openly.

That’s exactly what reporter Stacy Flynn ...

Last week I announced a contest to win a copy of I Am J signed by author Cris Beam. And now we have a winner!

I like the way Jackie, the photographer, uses objects in space to convey a sense of identity. Here’s the winning photo collage:

Contest: win a signed copy of I Am J

I Am J is the story of a Latino teenager coming out as a trans guy in New York City. I’m definitely a fan of young adult fiction, and this book’s a great example of how the genre can be used to raise awareness or offer young people an example of someone else like them, all while telling a good story. Miriam reviewed the book a few months ago.

I’m excited to announce a Feministing contest to win a copy of I am J signed by author Cris Beam. I want to acknowledge the book was originally signed for the dearly departed National Youth Advocacy Coalition – Beam generously let it be passed on to us.

In the book, J ...

Win free tickets to a screening of Hey, Boo!

A few months ago, I wrote about Hey, Boo, the new documentary about Harper Lee and her classic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. Now, you can win tickets to a fantastic event at the Paley Center next Wednesday night: a screening of the film and a panel discussion with Mary Murphy, who made the film, Tom Brokaw, of NBC News, and James McBride, author of The Color of Water.

So, what do you have to do to win yourself tickets to the screening? You have to write us a poem.

Make it a sonnet or a haiku, a limerick or an epic masterpiece. Just make it a poem, and make it about feminism. Poetically sucking up to Feministing Editors ...
