Which feminist books are you taking with you to college?(or grad school ,or the military, or wherever you decide to go in life!)

Hey everyone! I am heading off to college as a freshwoman in less than two weeks and am currently in the process of packing my stuff. I am going to bring some feminist books with me (of course). Hopefully I am not the only incoming freshwoman around here that is bringing feminist books with me to college. So if you are heading of to college/grad school this fall post the list of books you are bringing and maybe a line or two on why you are bringing that book to your already cramped dorm/apartment. Or if you are going into the military (is anyone?) you can write about which books you are bringing with you. Or if you have other plans with what you want to do with your life which books are you bringing with you. (Sorry I’m being redundant, I’m just trying to include everyone!)

Here is what I am bringing:

1. “The Beauty Myth” by Naomi Wolf -I feel like this book is definitely going to come in handy a lot. It was written the year I was born and almost nothing has changed with regards to beauty standards. Every time I read it, I can completely relate to it. I will probably be loaning this book out to a lot of people.

2. “Sisterhood is Forever” by Robin Morgan -The one word that comes to mind when I think of this book is “comprehensive”. It covers everything I would want it ...

Happy Day of Silence!

For those of you who are celebrating Day of Silence today. Post here letting us know how its going/ what you plan to do tonight to break the silence.

Here is mine:

Personally, I am at school sitting on the computer during lunch. I have accidently talked four times today already. I have a handmade rainbow shirt on and rainbow shoelaces. i also am carrying some Human Rights Campaign balloons with me from class to class. I currently have no plans on how I will break the silence. So far no one has harassed me today which is wonderful.

So yeah, here are some questions to help you respond to this. You don’t have to answer them, but I am personally curious.

1. Has ...

Tuesday Feminist Fuck You: Dr. Phil and Hereosexual Dating Double Standards

Ok, so it is not Friday but this episode of Dr. Phil definitely warrants a “fuck you”.
I was watching election news and it went to a commercial break. I flipped through channels and came to Dr. Phil and these older women were discussing how they thought there was a heterosexual dating double standard. I naively thought that the episode would seriously discuss dating double standards in our society. Unfortunately, I was wrong and all the show did was infuriate me.
The show featured a a 58 year old grandmother who liked to date younger men off of the internet and flew around the world meeting men. All Dr. Phil did was tell her how weird and “desperate” she was. ...

Anti-Planned Parenthood Propaganda: “Going Undercover”

I have some conservative blogger/activist friends on myspace that I keep on my friends list for the sole purpose of seeing what the conservative movement is up to.
Lately, a lot of them have been posting bulletins with this video in them.
the video is titled:
“Undercover Camera Catches 2nd Indiana Planned Parenthood Breaking Sexual Abuse Reporting Laws”
Basically, the “undercover” 13 year old girl goes to a Planned Parenthood clinic in Indiana and asks to have an abortion. She mentions that the “boyfriend” that got her pregnant was a “lot older”. She then tells another employee that her boyfriend is 31. The person then tells her to go to surrounding states.
Ok,I personally think that this video was ...

“Lesbian Star Rankings”

Ok, I have a terrible, guilty and un-feminist confession. I watched both seasons of “A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila” and (for the most part) enjoyed them.
I tried watching the first episode of that new bisexual dating show MTV has but I couldn’t do it, it creeps me out that they are having indentical twins kiss a whole bunch of the same people. (That is just my personal opinion, I have nothing against other people who like to see that.)
However, one theme that came up at the beginning of the first two seasons, as well as this new show (before I became creeped out by it) is what I like to call “lesbian star rankings”.
Basically, in ...

I am starting a feminism club at my high school!

Over the weekend, I was casually talking with some people about politics at a school-sponsored event. We were discussing whether we were pro-choice or pro-life and I ended up mentioning that I was a feminist. To my surprise a couple of other girls I previously had never spoken to told me they were also feminists. They are both underclassmen (well, underclasswomen) so this means that someone can succeed me in the club after I graduate this year! I mentioned starting a feminism club and they thought it was a good idea!
Ok, I have not gone through the “official” club formation process yet, but I will soon!
I never would have imagined that this would happen while I was still ...

How do you respond to someone who confuses your gender?

Last Friday, a speaker from the Republican party came to my high school and gave a speech on why he worked for the Republican party and what his daily schedule consisted of during an election year. After he gave the speech, the audience was allowed to ask questions. I raised my hand knowing he was sexist, because before the Q&A session he said, “now girls will need to speak louder, because I have trouble hearing girls”. However, when I raised my hand he told me “I will answer your question in a minute young sir” and answered the boy with the Sarah Palin button’s question first. When he got back to me, he continued to call me “young sir” until ...

Reading is now “too girly” for boys

I admit it, I don’t like reading fiction stories. I never read fiction books unless it is required for a class. However, it is important for people to know how to read and think critically. Reading is a necessary evil!
There is nothing wrong with thinking reading is boring, but there is a lot wrong with using sexist stereotypes as a way to dismiss it.
