Women and Weight

What do you do when a friend asks you to help her lose weight?

We’re both in the military and she’s over our max BMI by just a little bit. Unfortunately, weighing in over your max means you get put on the weight program, which can hold up advancement among other things.

My question is…how do I help her? I can tell her all I want about calories in vs calories out, but how do I do that with a feminist message? In the civilian world, I would just tell her not to worry, but here a couple of BMI points could be the difference between one pay grade and another.

have feminism, will watch TV

I’m looking for feminist media, ladies and gents. Strong, complex, interesting female leads, feminist points, etc. I’m open to anime, cartoons in general, tv shows and movies. I’ve already watched every thing ever put on this earth by Hayao Miyazaki and Joss Whedon.

Suggestions?

A Long Way To Go: My frustrations with the pro-feminist men’s movement

Last month, I attended a conference at the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John’s University in St. Joseph, Minnesota which was billed as the “First National Conference For Campus Based Men’s Gender Equality and Anti-Violence Groups”. Initially excited to be around pro-feminist allies who were willing to engage in tough discussion about issues related to masculinity and men’s violence against women, I left feeling disheartened rather than refreshed and revitalized. The reason being that several of the conference’s most outspoken attendees treaded anti-feminist ground by suggesting the conversation about men’s violence needs to be de-gendered, and that instead we use neutral language to talk about violence as a whole. Most anyone who has written on the subject of gender-based violence prevention ...

A Pro-Feminist Man’s Take on Tucker Max

I originally posted this on my Facebook and didn’t want to cross-post it here due to the onslaught of trolls it was sure to receive. However, last night my female partner and I went out to a bar on a date and a man thought it would be funny to tell a joke about beating women. Of course, I told him that wasn’t funny at all and domestic violence is never funny. I’m not writing this to big up myself but to voice my frustration that things like that happen. Men think it is perfectly acceptable to tell jokes about beating women and it’s expected that other men will be in on the joke. This, coupled with the post on ...

Mentorship

Long time reader, though this is the first time I’ve actually written…anything here. As a fairly young person, I’ve always felt like I would have very little insight to add to the discussion here. I’ve always felt content to read and ruminate.

Today I have something to say. First, my background…I am twenty, have been enlisted in the U.S. military since I was 17. I don’t meet many females. At all. In the past three years, I have had exactly 10 female co-workers (total. combined.) and at least three dozen male coworkers (total). Many times I have been the only female in the office/shop what have you, or one of two. I’ve decided this is unhealthy for me, but ...

Roger’s Park Young Women’s Action Team on front page of Chicago Sun Times

This is an incredible story from an amazing group of young women. From an e-mail I received yesterday. CTA = Chicago Transit Authority.

Dear YWAT Supporter,
In this morning’s Chicago Sun Times, the YWAT is featured in a front page story for our work in trying to improve safety for young women and girls on the CTA.
Our new report is being released today and we have already met with our Alderman Joe Moore and our Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin to share our findings
and solicit their support for our campaign. Our next steps are to continue to collect more stories of sexual violence on the CTA and to set up a meeting with the CTA Board to ...

“Men in Power” already are in power

I wrote this as a response to the Tribune article on the University of Chicago group Men in Power (MiP). I don’t know if it will be published. Regardless, I think it’s important for male allies to speak up even if the mainstream media will not acknowledge us. If you have not read the article, you can read it at the Tribune website, or check this thread:

I am writing this letter in response to Sara Olkon’s article about Men in Power (MiP) at the University of Chicago. What MiP President Steve Saltarelli fails to recognize is the mere fact that MiP is able to get press coverage in the Chicago Tribune and various media outlets without yet being a sanctioned ...
