Girls With Slingshots FTW!

Just thought I’d give a heads up that the kickass webcomic ‘Girls With Slingshots’ by Danielle Corsetto has a really cool story arc right now about STD testing and education. It’s given a humurous but matter-of-fact treatment and (to me) is really a shining example of the real scope of webcomics. Would a syndicated column in a mainstream newspaper get away with this? Hell noz.

Anyways, its awesome, check it out!

(The arc starts a bit further back when the protagonist’s lesbian roommate finds out a former partner had an STD, leading Hazel (straight) to think it would be a good idea for to to get tested too.)

Pick-up Lines for Feminists

Its often difficult to navigate the dating scene while feminist. What would you like to see in a potential partner? How do you prefer to approach/be approached?

Coulter in Canada…yeah, that’s not going to go well

So, Ann Coulter was supposed to speak at my campus today. Instead of going into all the drama which you will no doubt see plastered over the news, I’ll give you the brief version:

-VP Academic Francois Houle of the University of Ottawa sends a private caution to Coulter to educate herself about Canadian limits to free speech in regards to promoting hatred of identifiable groups. He concludes: "I therefore ask you, while you are a guest on our campus, to weigh your words with respect and civility in mind."

-Coulter goes crying to Conservative media and apparently registers a complaint with the Human Rights Commission that she is a victim of Houle’s "hate speech" towards "conservatives".

-Coulter speaks in London, the ...

Save the First Nations University of Canada

The Canadian Government has a long history of poor relations with our First Nations communities. The long-term damage of their residential school program, in which children were taken from their families and communities to be educated and essentially whitewashed in harmful, racist, sexist institutions for purposes of integration, is just one example of many bad policies.

Now, the government is attempting to cut the funding to the First Nations University of Canada as of April 1st. This would be the first university in Canadian history to have to close its doors. This university works to eliminate intersectional barriers to First Nations students. Please watch the video below and spread the word.

Porn for Women

Voila! Thanks to XKCD for putting this out there:

The idea seems to be that my deepest fantasies, like the rest of my life, likely revolve around housework. So I wanted to write in to clarify: In my porn, people fuck.” >

Alice: Feminist Champion?

I swear, I will give this a critical analysis in a few days when I’m done fangirling, but I just got back from seeing the new Alice in Wonderland…and I truly believe that I have seen my first feminist fairytale come true.

For the past few hours, I have been overcome with unadulterated joy. I love this movie. Not just for the awesome female protagonists, not just because it totally passes the Bechdel Test , and not just because its not about Alice getting a man. Tim Burton’s take on Alice features a grown woman having an adventure of her own, kicking ass, and discovering new strengths in herself.

You see, for a very long time, I’ve been very dissatisfied with ...

A Happy Effing Period to you too!

Based on the number of wonderful women who visit this site each day, I’m assuming many of you are probably suffering with me. Feeling crampy and sleepless at 4am is an unfortunate byproduct of being an aforementioned wonderful woman.

I feel that menstrual cycles are really under-discussed still in our society. As a scholar, my greatest tool for addressing stigma is knowledge, talking about something until it becomes a casual, natural thing.

Sometimes though, you just need some chocolate and laughs, so armed with Lindors and a heating pad, I jumped over to my favourite menstrual site: The Museum of Menstruation and Women’s Health

In addition to some great resources and images on the history of women’s health and menstruation around the ...

December 6th – Remembering the Montreal Massacre

Originally posted on The F-Wave

My fingers were bitten by the cold air as they clasped the candle. My breath blew out in white clouds that dissipated quickly in the night. Snow was falling softly, quietly, passively  among the gathered crowd. It was almost too cold for the tears wiped quickly from our eyes. Here, in Minto Park, in Ottawa, we gathered to remember.

20 years ago, on December 6th , fourteen women were murdered at L’École Polytechnique in Montréal. They were murdered by a man because they were women. Because they were women who dared to pursue a university degree in engineering, a field that continues to be traditionally dominated by men. The man in question, Marc Lepine, was ...
