EMILY’s List Celebrates 2012 Milestones

I was honored to attend the EMILY’s List 2nd Inaugural Brunch over the weekend to not only celebrate the re-election of President Obama, but also the historic victories for women this election cycle.  Thanks to EMILY’s list, during the 2011- 2012 election cycle, we “elect[ed] a historic number of candidates – the only pro-choice Democratic woman governor in the country, 19 new women to the House, six Senate incumbents, and three new Senators – all the first women to represent their states in the Senate. And this cycle, women we’ve helped elect include the first Hindu and first female combat veterans to serve in the House, the first openly gay Senator, and the first Asian American woman ...

Breaking news: first openly bisexual person elected to Congress

The election was too close to call before, but as of today, Kyrsten Sinema has defeated Tea Partier Vernon Parker in Arizona’s 9th Congressional District. Sinema is the only openly bisexual person in the Senate or the House, though she joins fellow LGBT officials like Senator Tammy Baldwin, and Reps. Jared Polis of Colorado, David Cicilline of Rhode Island, Sean Patrick Maloney of New York, Mark Pocan of Wisconsin and Mark Takano of California.

This is a victory of a true progressive over a true reactionary. While a member of the Arizona legislature, Sinema advocated for LGBT, immigrants’ and veterans’ rights. She is also a non-theist, who received an award from The Center for Inquiry (CFI) for ...

Meet Tammy Baldwin, your first-ever openly gay Senator

“It’s incredible being given the opportunity to shatter glass ceilings but the more important focus is making sure we are creating a path many more will follow. I might not have aspired to public office if women and openly gay and lesbian candidates hadn’t run before me and shown me that doing so was possible. I recognized when I became the first woman elected to congress from the state of Wisconsin and first out lesbian elected in the history of U.S. that that’s not enough. We need to have legislative bodies that reflect America. Being a first is an extraordinary privilege, but the battle is won when there are many.”

The Feministing Five: Representative Tammy Baldwin

Tammy Baldwin, U.S. Representative from the 2nd District of Wisconsin, announced in September that she is running for Senate in next year’s election. Representative Baldwin is a pioneer in many ways; as the first woman ever elected to Wisconsin’s Congress, she is also the first openly lesbian Representative and first openly gay non-incumbent elected to U.S. Congress. If elected to the Senate, she would be the first openly gay U.S. Senator.

But as amazing and inspiring as all those things are, we have a ton more to look forward to with a candidate like Baldwin. Not only is she breaking glass ceilings with all of her endeavors, but her progressive values stay firmly rooted regardless of how ...
