Quote of the Day: Man-brain edition

Maine House Minority Leader Ken Fredette explained that he doesn’t support Obamacare’s federal funding for Medicaid expansion because of his “man’s brain.” Via ThinkProgress:

As I listen to the debate today and earlier debate on this bill, I can’t help but think of a title of a book, Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus. And it’s a book about the fact that men sort of think one way in their own brain, in their own world. And women think another way in their own brain and in their own world. And it really talks about the way that men and women can do a better job at communicating. Because if you listen to the debate today, in my mind — ...

Quote of the Day: State lawmaker calls women “vaginas”

Here’s what New Hampshire State Rep. Peter Hansen wrote in an email to the official legislative listserv in response to a debate on a gun bill earlier this month.

What could possibly be missing from those factual tales of successful retreat in VT, Germany, and the bowels of Amsterdam? Why children and vagina’s of course. While the tales relate the actions of a solitary male the outcome cannot relate to similar situations where children and women and mothers are the potential victims.

I’ll just echo Hansen’s colleague State Rep. Rick Watrous: “Are you really using ‘vaginas’ as a crude catch-all for women? Really?”

But seriously…

Remembering Adrienne Rich: “Poetry was a feminist practice”

Ed. note: We regret publishing this piece without acknowledging or critiquing Rich’s history of transphobia and in particular her support for Janice G. Raymond, author of the discriminatory and hateful “The Transsexual Empire: The Making of the She-Male.” To be clear: By failing to acknowledge the late author’s views on womanhood, feminists risk writing trans people out of the movement. Please see this piece for a comment from our Executive Editor on this issue.

This past Wednesday marked the anniversary of the death of poet and feminist Adrienne Rich. As we close out Women’s History Month and begin National Poetry Month this Monday, it seems fitting to remember wise words from one of the most prominent voices in ...

Quote of The Day: Andrea Dworkin

A Throwback Thursday quote for our intensely national focus on rape in our culture and institutions from the late feminist activist, Andrea Dworkin:

“I don’t believe rape is inevitable or natural. If I did, I would have no reason to be here. If I did, my political practice would be different than it is. Have you ever wondered why we [women] are not just in armed combat against you? It’s not because there’s a shortage of kitchen knives in this country. It is because we believe in your humanity, against all the evidence.”

Quote of the Day: Ashley Judd is just like Todd Akin

In the latest conservative attempt to discredit Ashley Judd before she’s even said she’s running for the Senate, the Daily Caller points to her history of “bizarre” feminist comments:

By getting in the race with this sort of baggage, Judd runs the risk of being portrayed as a Todd Akin-esque candidate – meaning voters simply decide she’s unqualified to serve as a senator, because her comments are so outrageous and extreme that people can’t bring themselves to vote for her.

LOL. Yep, recognizing that sexism exists and believing that is a problem is “outrageous” and “extreme.” Totally the same as taking the fringe position of opposing abortion in cases of rape and making offensive–and scientifically ignorant–comments suggesting that women regularly ...

Quote of the Day: The baby is “the largest organ in the body”

Alabama state Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin is pushing a new TRAP bill that could shut down all five of the state’s abortion clinics. According to her, the strict regulations are necessary because abortion is a major surgery. In fact, she claims:

“When a physician removes a child from a woman, that is the largest organ in a body. That’s a big thing. That’s a big surgery. You don’t have any other organs in your body that are bigger than that.”

A few questions for Rep. McClurkin:

1) Wait, is a fetus an organ or a person?

2)  Almost 90 percent of abortions take place in the first trimester. At that point, the fetus is roughly the size of this fish. On what scale is ...
