Ashley Judd on the misogynistic harassment she received for tweeting about sports

This past weekend, Ashley Judd, actress, feminist, and Kentucky basketball fan, made a comment on Twitter about how her team’s opponent was “playing dirty & can kiss my team’s free throw making a—.” For this minor bit of shit-talking, hardly out of the norm within the craze of March Madness, she was — surprise, surprise — inundated with a barrage of misogynistic tweets.

Remember the woman who received an unsolicited dick pic and sent it on to the guy’s mother? Well, an Australian video game journalist is taking a similar approach to the rape threats she receives in social media — which she’s been seeing an uptick in these days thanks to GamerGate

Misogynistic gun extremists are harassing women speaking out for gun reforms

Mother Jones has an important and disturbing piece about how gun extremists are harassing women speaking out for gun reforms.

Though vitriol flows from both sides in the gun debate, these menacing tactics have begun to alarm even some entrenched pro-gun conservatives.

The women featured in the piece — ...

Daniel Tosh was heckled & that’s the real crime or how not to write a real headline

Daniel Tosh’s comments to the woman he joked about being gang-raped did not constitute an apology but a “fauxpology,”  as Vanessa pointed out yesterday.

Tosh uses some classic tricks to apologize, without really apologizing.

Trick One: I was misquoted. Tosh seeks to relieve himself of any responsibility, since, hey, he didn’t even say it.

Trick Two: I was the victim. Tosh seeks to undermins his apology by defending the point that started the entire interaction. He did nothing wrong but defend himself of a heinous violation–heckling! This is a weak apology at best and a passive aggressive dig at worst.

Does he really think people will not see the trickery he is employing to NOT apologize but say he is? Well, ...

#MenCallMeThings reveals what’s inside everyone’s Anti-Feminist Mailbag

As I mentioned this past weekend, recently there’s been some renewed discussion about online misogyny. On both sides of the pond, women bloggers have been speaking out about the sexist abuse they endure–often silently and stoically–for, as Jill says, “the crime of Blogging While Female.”

While commenters can be dicks all over the internet, it’s undeniably true that the hateful vitriol that fills women’s–and especially feminists’–inboxes and comments queues is often of a distinctly misogynist variety. And it’s so constant that it’s impossible to keep writing online if you don’t figure out to deal with it–how to brush it off or ignore it or ridicule it or cope in some other way. ...
