What We Missed

Around the world, supporters of three members of  the feminist punk rock band Pussy Riot prepare to protest Friday’s verdict. This is a good idea, since the lawyers representing the three women say there is no chance they will be found not-guilty.

Supreme Court: We heart racial profiling!

Today, the Supreme Court ruled on Arizona’s controversial SB 1070 immigration law. The good news is that it struck down key parts of the law, which is  why it is being hailed as a victory for the Obama Administration, which brought the case to the Supreme Court. The bad news is that it upheld the “show me your papers” part  that encourages racial profiling, which is why Governor Jan “Finger” Brewer is praising the ruling as a victory.

Leslie Berestein Rojas at Southern California Public Radio (KPCC) lays out what the ruling does:

Utah, Arizona and Kansas pass extreme anti-choice legislation (and the new GOP anthem)

It’s kind of laughable that as GOP denial continues with their whole “the ‘war on women’ is a myth” talking points on the airwaves and talk shows, GOP state legislation continues to dig themselves in a deeper and deeper hole with state legislation that completely screws Americans with uteri and their families. Here are a few tidbits of what’s happened in just the past week:

Tomorrow, the country’s longest waiting period is set to go into effect in Utah, which will force patients to wait 72 hours before getting an abortion. The House of Reps in Kansas just passed a bill that would force doctors to lie to patients about the health risks of abortion, allow pharmacists to ...

Today we find that the Supreme Court will be hearing challenges to Arizona’s SB 1070, the highly controversial law passed last year that would essentially legalize racial profiling in the state. AP reports:

The Supreme Court agreed Monday to rule on Arizona’s controversial law targeting illegal immigrants, setting the stage for an election-year decision on an issue that is already shaping presidential politics.

The justices said they will review a federal appeals court ruling that blocked several tough provisions in the Arizona law. One of those requires that police, while enforcing other laws, question a person’s immigration status if officers suspect he is in ...
