Jezebel staff calls out Gawker for refusing to deal with their rape gif problem

For awhile now, Jezebel has been dealing with some trolls posting gifs of violent porn in their comments section using anonymous burner accounts. It’s a shitty game of whack-a-mole that exposes readers to triggering content and requires the writers and editors to delete the comments every day. After months of inaction by the higher ups at Gawker Media, the Jezebel staff is publicly demanding they address the problem

TimesTen

Thanks to your support Feministing #TimesTen is funded! Here’s what we’ll do with our $50k stretch goal

Wow. You are all amazing! You helped Feministing #TimesTen reach its $30,000 funding goal within two weeks, and the numbers keep climbing. So far, over 700 backers have given an average pledge amount of about $40, showing that our community can do truly amazing things when we come together. I agree with what Jos tweeted yesterday:

Feministing #TimesTen‘s success shows me the feminist internet is full of great ppl who lift up & support each other http://t.co/2vVjbJY5se

— Jos Truitt (@jostruitt) December 3, 2013

To that end, we’ll be riding out the next two weeks to get all the funds we can. We’re adding a stretch goal ...

Join Rosario Dawson as a backer of Feministing #TimesTen!

The Feministing crew is honored, humbled, and blown away by the outpouring of support our Kickstarter received on its first day. As of writing this, we’re about to cross $10,000 from 300 backers, which brings us 1/3 of the way to our goal for relaunching Feministing!

We know yesterday’s fundraising success is down to you, the Feministing community. We’re so grateful for every dollar you give and everyone you encourage to donate, as well.

We thought you might like to know you were joined yesterday by Rosario Dawson as a backer of the campaign:

I’m so proud to be an official backer and supporter of the next phase of @Feministing. Join me! http://t.co/RseGLpn986 #timesten

Feministing names new Senior Editor, Editors, and Contributors!

There’s been a lot of big changes happening around these parts, with Samhita, the last member of the Feministing original recipe crew, stepping down as Executive Editor and Lori, Maya, and Jos becoming Executive Directors. Now we’re pleased to announce more recent staffing changes:

Chloe Angyal is becoming Feministing’s first Senior Editor. Chloe has been a long time member of the team – she joined us in 2009 as the Interviews Contributor and founder of the Feministing Five series, and became an Editor in 2011. In addition to her work at this site, she’s written for a ton of print and online outlets and appeared as a regular guest on MSNBC and Al Jazeera. She’s currently completing ...

Feministing names new Executive Directors!

By Lori, Maya, and Jos

“Feminist blogs have quietly churned out feminist leaders for the last decade. While some may be looking for the “Next Great Feminist Leader,” we realized early on that’s not the kind of leadership 21st Century feminism needs. Many of us are leaders in our fields, working online and off to bring stories, complexity, and new voices to our work. We’ve indirectly proven that leadership looks different in the age of mass participation and global movements. There is no one leader; there is instead the sum of all of us.” – Samhita Mukhopadhyay

Samhita has been an incredible Executive Editor and mentor to all of us. Her stepping down comes at a time when the Feministing ...

Lori, Jos, and student panelist at a speaking event.

Wanna hang out?

“I loved that the speakers were down to earth and were easy for others to relate to. I have had nothing but rave reviews from those who were in attendance. My favorite part was the panel discussion because it brought outside perspectives to the issue of sexual violence on college campuses.” -Lindsay Moore, student organizer, Miami University

For four years, the Feministing crew has been traveling to colleges and community centers to talk feminism, organizing, and blogging with students, activists, and professors. Events are booking up fast for the fifth year of our speaking tour, Feministing: Offline and Unfiltered. And we want to make sure we get a chance to meet all of you!

Support our upcoming meetings and the future of Feministing blogging

The Feministing team is hard at work planning two important working weekends in the next month. And we need your support to fund these meetings and make our work possible.

This weekend, part of the site’s leadership team is meeting to plan Feministing’s financial future. We’ve blogged before about the fact that Feministing is a “labor of love,” which really means its the third shift work the team does for almost no money after all the other work we’re already doing. This makes our blogging incredibly unsustainable – folks often struggle to keep up our commitment to Feministing, knowing what we do here is important but also knowing we all need to eat. This is particularly hard for those ...

The Feministing Five: Akiba Solomon

This past February, Colorlines announced Akiba Solomon as its new managing editor. And it’s no surprise. She’s been writing about race and gender for years now. She spent the early part of her years at print magazines like The Source and Essence. She eventually made her way to online journalism (and candidly speaks with me about how this switch sometimes isn’t a choice for journalists of color).

Over the past two years, she’s run the Gender Matters column on the site where she’s discussed SlutWalk and black feminism, the abortion-as-black-genocide lobby,  and even Blue Ivy and the alleged ugliness of blackness. She has a brave way of bringing the personal into the political, evident ...
