Celebrity Fat Shaming is the New Black

(originally posted at Skinny Therese )

I recently found this article online. I was researching people who had lost 100 pounds or more and had kept it off. I want to get a sense of what that is like even before I get to the maintenance phase of my journey. I want to talk a little bit about fat shaming.

I want to lose weight because it will substantially improve my quality of life. I will not tire out as easily throughout the day. I nearly collapsed from heat exhaustion this weekend while sight seeing in DC. It was so humiliating! I had not realized how out of shape I was until that moment. When I drop this weight, I will not be at risk for obesity-related diseases as I get older. It will increase my life expectancy. It will be easier for me to get affordable health and life insurance. I will be able to wear skirts and shorts again, which are much cooler in the summertime, because I will not suffer from the very painful  “chub rub” – which is what a co-worker of mine at the ACLU used to call the rubbing together of one’s thighs underneath one’s skirt. I will save money on clothing. Plus-size clothing costs more money. Clothing is available in so-called “standard” sizes (12 and below) at thrift shops and other stores for a fraction of the cost. I will be looking for ...

Matrimania Gone Wild: Facebook and Random Baby Edition

(Also posted at The Unmarried Estate Blog )

I got married on Friday. The entire deal cost about $380, including the dinner, the cost of a new shirt and pair of jeans for me (yes we got married in jeans), and what it cost to pay our wedding official. The next day we woke up and did what we usually do on Saturday. We got up, ate breakfast, got dressed and prepared to start our day. We also both checked our e-mail and Facebook pages, as we do everyday, where we both updated our relationship status. Within moments our Facebook pages started blowing up with some of the most obnoxious, yet well-meaning congratulatory well wishes. Now, the people who know ...

Feminist Estate Planning

I am a longtime reader of feministing. I think a big part of being a powerful woman in this world is to be proactive in managing your finances and taking an active role in planning for your future. Building wealth on your own –  whether you are male, female, gay or straight – and planning for the distribution of that wealth is vital. In that spirit, I am started a blog where I will discuss estate planning for unmarried people: single men and women, same sex couples, the single elderly, etc…I am an attorney and currently pursuing a master’s in tax law with a focus on estate planning. My blog is brand spanking new – I am new to ...

Purity Ball: In Prime Time!

Anyone catch that special on the founders of the Purity Ball on TLC last night? Wow was that creepy. I personally can’t wait for Jessica’s book on this whole purity movement thing…any thoughts on the special from anyone who saw it?

My favorite part: "If I meet a boy my Daddy has to inspect him first." Wow. And these girls did not even kiss the guy until their wedding day…weird.

Backlash: The Cult of Mommyhood

With the birth of the Brangelina twins, the "attack" on Hollywood mothers that don’t vaccinate their kids recently made by Amanda Peet, and the paparazzi trolling for baby bumps, I have been thinking alot about media "Pro-Mommy Propaganda." It seems like it is everywhere.

As a woman who never wanted children I confess that this is the thing that would make me nuts if I ever became a mother: Getting dragged into the Cult of Motherhood. I have seen people that I like and respect – both in Hollywood and my personal life – become boring, indulgent, judgmental drones when they become mothers.

My question is this: are there things that would change (for the worse) even the most committed feminist if ...
