Beyonce

It’s easy for black women to like Beyonce. She’s a single female entity of commercial success, unapologetic sass, and Girl Power anthems.

But it’s harder to see that the success of her persona relies on its ability to balance the dynamics of female power. The tightrope that gives any  woman permission to be independent, sexual, and bold; so long as she is not too tough, not too slutty, not too “bitchy”, so long as she doesn’t pose a real threat to male power.

The same idea plays out in her music. 2001 brought the release of Destiny’s Childs’ Independent Woman, a so-called salute of financial empowerment that urged you to “throw your hands up” if you bought the car you were driving and the “rock” you were “rockin”. But in 2004, came Cater 2 U, a nod to the 1950s housewife era of man-pleasing that called for running his bathwater or rubbing his feet. Getting his “dinner, slippers, dessert, and so much more.”

In 2008 it was Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It), a relationship revenge song about “doing your own thing”, but only if your man wouldn’t marry you first. And in 2011, we got Girls Run the World a declaration of female domination that claimed women were “smart enough to make the millions/strong enough to bear the children.”

Her songs, though with explicit “empowerment” content, have retroactive connotations about relationships, sexuality and gender roles; a woman of modern means who still wants to preserve ...

I spy stupid: “Beauty and the Beat”

An SYTYCB entry

[Originally published on my blog, The Negress]

The video you are about to watch is of the most profound ig’nance. My apologies in advance.

“Beauty and the Beat” takes us along on a white girls musical voyage into The Hood where she meets girls with names like “Bonesquisha” who scream from car windows and “Jerome” who want her digits because her “ass is phat”. The video, done by ToddyMobs,  has garnered close to four million views on YouTube, and rather than the outrage-infused- social- media firestorm I’d imagined would ensue, people mostly thought it was, well, funny.

Because apparently, it’s not racist if it’s written by a black dude.

In defense of Lindy West: How rape culture & comedy collide

Originally posted on The Negress.

When I read Lindy West’s piece, “How To Make A Rape Joke”   on Jezebel.com, (a response to comedian Daniel Tosh telling actual rape jokes at the Laugh Factory) I basically had two reactions: 1) Wanting to immediately find and marry her then subsequently have her illegitimate babies, and 2) Wanting to link it in as many cyberspace avenues as possible–sharing what I thought was a hilarious, critically informed, and well executed article. But a quick scroll down to the ol’ discussions section informed me that I was alone in my praises. Readers slammed her, calling her everything from a “troll” to dismissing her argument as “bogus”.

As self-proclaimed Jezebel groupie I feel it ...

Things I’d Rather Do Than See Madea’s Witness Protection

It’s official: Tyler Perry hates black people. What other logical explanation is there for the creation of yet another disastrous addition to the Madea series? And while some people don’t mind paying 10 bucks to sit in a theater surrounded by black church ladies to watch the world’s Most Acclaimed Minstrel show, I don’t really see the point.

I mean, if you’ve seen the other 8,000 Perry films, you already know whats going to happen:

[Opening Credits]

Enter Madea. Still not wearing a bra. She slaps some kids around and slides around in her house shoes, providing us with images of The Mammy and hypermasculine-”strong black woman” within five minutes of the film. Secondary characters will over-act, over dramatize, over-emphasize the already cliched script. Heroine ...

How To Be A Feminist in 2012.

Having identified as a feminist for over seven years now, I’ve reached the stage where almost no amount of stupidity can shock me. Newbie feminists, however, should at least get a heads up about what to expect and how to handle future episodes of stupidity they’re bound to face. Cuz this is ain’t the 70′s, friends, there are people called Snooki running around, and the image of a feminist–a person who simply believes in equal rights for women–has been distorted by numerous backlashes and trite stereotypes continue to live on. Thus, below are the most common things you can expect to hear from an anti-feminist, and how to deal when you do:

So you hate men?”

This is almost guaranteed to ...

I Spy Stupid: “Obama is Making Kids Gay”

Among the things conservatives hold President Obama responsible for (rising gas prices, unemployment, falsified birth certificate, economic collapse that occured before he was even inaugurated) we can now add converting kids to homosexuality to the list. In our latest segment of Blame The Black Dude for Everything, YouTube vlogger CaidenCowgerProgram (and Rick Santorum’s long lost son), claims that kids he’s known from middle school who were previously straight have made a “decision” to become gay due to Obama’s “encouragement”–and because apparently, gayness is becoming all the rage among young people. But I’m confused. When did we become all, “Hey guys, you know what would be so cool? Switching our sexual preference to people we aren’t naturally attracted to before coming ...

#WhatMakesABlackGirlMad

I think Twitter really ought to get some sort of disclaimer on its site. A mandatory Terms and Agreements page that prepares you for the experience; WARNING: You are about to witness some extremely i’gnant shit.  So when that moment comes and you find yourself staring at your timeline in a blank stupor and suffer a subsequent nervous breakdown triggered by the sudden realization that this generation has the combined I.Q of a hamster–you can’t sue anybody.

It may have very well spared me the countless mental meltdowns that’ve occurred since my joining; including (but not limited to) being subjected to hashtags like #HoesOutHereShapedLike, #CelebritiesWhoLookLikeTheyStank, and of course, #WhatMakesABlackGirlMad.

I know what you’re thinking. The last doesn’t look all that bad. Hell, ...
