Cookie Jar: Sexist?

I saw this video on MTV and thought the song was a bit sexist. Hell, the part in the middle with the different “flavors” struck me as being down-right racist. The song is Cookie Jar by Gym Class Heroes. I know there was talk of Katy Perry’s song being offensive though I didn’t think it was that bad; I think her boyfriend in Gym Class Heroes has something much worse

Am I overreacting here or do you guys see what I’m talking about?

The world John McCain was born into

When I was a little girl, one of my grandparents made an unintentionally racist remark. For the life of me, I can’t remember exactly what they said, but only my mother’s explanation for it “You have to remember that people carry certain prejudices from the world they were born into.” My paternal grandparents are only a few years older than John McCain. The fact of the matter is that unless you’re an extremely open-minded person, you do carry certain ideas and prejudices with you from the world you were born into. People think it’s an issue of humor how old John McCain is, but it’s true that his attitudes, especially towards women, seem to be heavily influenced by a different time.

I like the way I look

It seems the internet has figured out that I’m a girl. For some reason for the last few months, every ad on every site I go to, even male-dominated ones, is for something marketed at women. From romantic comedy banner ads featuring smiling pictures of some actor who was on Grey’s Anatomy, to obviously fake “Before and After” photos plugging some new diet pill or anti-aging product.

It’s the second set that bothers me most. Every where I go someone tries to sell me something to make me look better. Even in the mall, young women at kiosks accost me trying to sell me lotions and mineral make-up. It seems that almost everything marketed to women has something to do with ...

The Girl

Last week, I went on my computer and watched a video of a match I did with a team I was on for a local TV show. It was a “brain bowl” team and the show was like a game show involving teams from local high schools answering questions for points. I’d seen the tape before a dozen times, though not for nearly two years because it was too painful for me to watch. Later on in the playing season that we went on that show the team captain began stalking and sexually harassing me to the point I was forced to quit the team because I just couldn’t stand to be around him any longer. Even if he had ...

Anti-Feminist Women

“I am every day more convinced that we women, if we are to be good women, feminine and amiable and domestic, are not fitted to reign; at least it is they that drive themselves to the work which it entails.”
-Queen Victoria
Last week I saw that quote (ironically) used as a signature on a forum I sometimes go to. It got me thinking about why so many women hate having rights.
It seems like most anti-feminist women are women who already have all the opportunities they want. Queen Victoria, for example, lived in a castle where she bossed people around all day. I doubt, once she became Queen at least, she had to deal with sexism on an every ...

Elizabeth I was “really a man”

I’m a huge history nut. My favorite historical figure is probably Queen Elizabeth I. She kicked ass. There are a lot of crazy untrue myths about her, like with most women in history. But today I want to talk about the one that bothers me the most because it’s rooted in some really disgusting sexism. The one that says Elizabeth was really a man.

That’s right. Even though her parents had desperately wanted a son and had no reason at all to raise one as a daughter, some how she was actually male. Don’t ask me how. This is one that’s become a bit of an urban legend, spread on by giggling teenage boys and “Old Boy’s Club” professors. I even ...

Queens, Virgins, and Sluts

(I hope to post more parts of this is anyone’s interested in reading it. And let me clarify I’m an American and I don’t actually dislike the monarchy or think it should be abolished, I just don’t like some of the sexism that comes with it)

The monarchy in Great Britain is one of the few monarchies in Europe that still has male-preference primogeniture. For the unfamiliar, basically that means that when the throne is vacant, it goes to the oldest son. Only if there are no sons can it go to a daughter. If there are no children at all, it goes back through the line of the next son back a generation. For example, if a King had a ...
