FIA establishes Women & Motor Sport Commission

This is just a quick note to let everyone know that the Federation International Automobile (FIA) has established a new Women and Motorsport Commission, with the aim of promoting greater participation by women in all aspects of motorsport.
From the announcement: “The WMC aims to put in place strategies and policies that will promote education and training, and put into practice actions and events that will strengthen the participation of women in all areas of motor sport. The Commission will work with the FIA’s sporting and non-sporting commissions, ASNs and other key international federations on joint sporting projects. The WMC will also take an active role in international forums and conferences devoted to the place of women in sport, and the advances that can be made.

The first president of the commission is Michelle Mouton. This personally thrills me. Michelle has become one of my favourite drivers despite the fact I never got to see her race. I grew up playing with scale models of the same car (Audi Quattro) that she used to win 4 rounds of the World Rally Championship, and narrowly miss the Championship with in 1982.
Motor racing is one of the few sports in which men and women are free to compete on an even footing, and women have graced the highest eschellons of the sport. Yet, motor sport and car culture in general remains dominated by men and strongly linked to masculine culture. Any effort to increase female participation in motor racing can only be a good thing for breaking down gender roles and irradicating the idea of male and female domains. But looking at motor sport in particular is great because it encompasses the dual spheres of sport/competition and technology. I look forward to seeing what impact the commission will have.
