FBI: Increase in anti-gay hate crimes, racist crimes remain high


New data from the FBI shows a 11 percent increase in hate crimes based on sexual orientation. Racially motivated hate crimes were down less than 1 percent and remain the largest category – with nearly 5,000 incidents in 2008.
Think Progress points out that the FBI will now start to record hate crimes motivated by gender and gender identity due to the passage of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr., Hate Crimes Prevention Act.
