The Gender Test

I’m not particularly proud to admit that I visit Sparknotes occasionally (and would like to blame the poor quality of some college courses for inspiring me to do so).  In any case, imagine my suprise when today, on the front page of this website aimed at high school (and yes, college) students I see: "Confused? The gender test will help you sort it out."

A series of 50 question with questions ranging from "Would you rather fall to your death or drown?" to "Do you prefer to drink from a straw?

Perhaps one thing this test does do is exemplify how silly the gender signifiers our society has constructed are.  But then it goes ahead and uses those silly signifiers to impose a gender identity on the test-taker.

Upon completing the test, Sparknotes asserts that they are a percentage certain that you are a woman or man…and then they say that, "statistically speaking, you are a woman/man–whether you know it or not." (emphasis not mine)

Well good.  Thanks for clearing that up for me, Sparknotes.
