Breaking: George Zimmerman has a new social media strategy!

When god closes a website, he opens a Facebook page! George Zimmerman’s defense attorney, Mark O’Mara, has established a Facebook and Twitter account for his client after Zimmerman disabled his previous website, which raised $200,000 for him. Zimmerman just plum forgot to disclose this money when the judge was determining his bond, something his lawyer deemed an “oversight.” You know when you forget about a couple hundred thousand dollars you have lying around? Of course you do – we’ve all been there. As of 2:11 PM on April 30th, the Facebook page already has 772 likes, and the twitter account has 625 followers and 41 tweets.

George Zimmerman apologizes to Trayvon Martin’s parents, gets bond at $150K

George Zimmerman took the witness stand during his bail hearing and apologized to Trayvon Martin’s parents for the death of their son.

The Associated Press reports that Zimmerman made the brief statement during his bond hearing. He is currently awaiting trial and faces life in prison if convicted of second-degree murder in a case that has captured the nation.

Zimmerman told Martin’s parents that he was “sorry for the loss of your son” and stated that he didn’t know that Martin was both 17 and unarmed during their altercation in Sanford, Florida.

Natalie Jackson, an attorney for the Martin family, said Zimmerman’s apology was “insulting,” adding, “This is the most unmeaningful apology we’ve ever seen in our entire lives.”

George Zimmerman charged with 2nd degree murder for Trayvon Martin killing

Over at EBONY, I explain what the second degree murder charge in the Trayvon Martin case means and what happens next. Yesterday, George Zimmerman was finally arrested and charged for the killing of Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman is in custody and will have a standard bond hearing today which will be televised. The special prosecutor Angela Corey in a poised press conference explained the charges and that her team had done a full investigation and would do their best to get a conviction on a charge which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. The thing about John Derbyshire

He is a self-avowed racist. And also a sexist – both for a long while.

And in the couple days following his racist screed, Derbyshire a longtime writer for the National Review, that age-old bastion of truth telling, was fired from the publication. In the immediate aftermath, conservative commentators have been clutching their pearls and carrying on about how “contemptible” and “breathtaking” Derbyshire’s racism is, calling it “indefensible.” They couldn’t run fast enough or far enough.

To my mind, there are a couple of interesting elements of this public shaming and ostracization of Derbyshire.

The website, therealgeorgezimmerman.com is set up to accept donations, in lieu of other sites that purport to be raising money for him. But it’s being reported that this one is legitimately his. It says:

George Zimmerman claims he killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in self- defense, though Zimmerman outweighed Martin by over 60 pounds and though his gun outarmed Martin’s pack of skittles. Part of Zimmerman’s dubious defense claim is that he was the one whose screams for help can be heard on the 911 calls made by concerned neighbors. But experts say this is not the case. George Zimmerman’s “self defense” story of Trayvon Martin shooting falls apart

ABC News obtained the police surveillence video recorded right after George Zimmerman shot and killed Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman through his attorney and his “black friend” Joe Oliver claims that he and Trayvon got into a fight on the night that Trayvon was killed.

The police leaked Zimmerman’s account of the shooting to the Orlando Sentinel which claimed that Trayvon approached George Zimmerman when he was walking back to his car and that Trayvon punched Zimmerman in the face, breaking his nose. Zimmerman also claims that Trayvon while on top of him during a scuffle bashed his head into the ground several times causing lacerations on the back of his head.

Well, that version of events appears to be complete bullshit.

“Do I look suspicious?”

Students at the historically Black college Howard University have put together this beautiful little video about racial profiling and the assumption that any man of colour in a hoodie is suspicious.

In light of the comments about how Trayvon Martin’s clothing was as much to blame for his death as the man who killed him, many people have been making the point that any man of colour is considered suspicious in America, regardless of what he’s wearing. As one of my friends said, “It’s not about the clothes. It’s never about the clothes.” As the men of Howard explain so succinctly and beautifully, it’s about racial profiling.
