God made a Latina farmer, too

Here’s a remake of the lovely but very white-washed Super Bowl ad for Dodge Ram trucks farmers. By Isaac Cubillos, via Rawstory:

This one’s a little bit closer to reality in a country in which 72 percent of farmworkers are foreign-born–including 68 percent from Mexico–and 22 percent are women. There’s also more diversity among farm operators than you’d think based on the Dodge ad–and it’s increasing. Colorlines reports that the growth in the number of non-white operators has outpaced the overall industry growth in the last decade, and in 2007 about 30 percent of operators were women.

Farmers are great, and as we appreciate the people who made the food we eat, remember they’re mostly undocumented immigrants who are paid ...

Florida Gov. Rick Scott begins voter disenfranchisement tactics, targeting Latinos

Many of us know what an exceptionally heinous human being Florida Governor Rick Scott is, and he’s won that title pretty easily over the past few years: vetoing funds for rape centers during Sexual Assault Awareness month, cutting funding to programs for people with disabilities (while conjunctively calling for billions in corporate and property tax cuts), supporting immigration legislation that would exempt white people — these are just a few of the gems he’s brought to the state of Florida.

So what is his new pet project? To disenfranchise potentially thousands of voters in efforts to win Mitt Romney the presidency. Think Progress reports:

Florida Governor Rick Scott (R) has ordered the state to purge all “non-citizens” from ...

GOP leader who told Latinos not to vote, voted on Friday

Via Colorlines

I wrote about the group “Latinos for Reform,” a group aligned with the GOP, that tried to air this ad in Nevada, telling Latinos they shouldn’t vote.

Well, their President, Roberto DePosada, ignored his group’s own advice and voted via absentee ballot in Virginia on Friday.

Just more proof that their message was really meant for Latinos who might vote Democrat.

Univison rejects GOP group’s ad urging Latinos not to vote

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKFAiMbm1Fc

Yesterday, ThinkProgress broke the story that Univision was set to air an $80,000 ad from “Latinos for Reform — a Republican 527 group” that was urging Latinos not to vote–seemingly to punish Democratic leaders. The ad specifically targets Nevada and the reelection battle that Harry Reid is engaged in.

The ad is appalling, and a not-so-veiled attempt at helping the Republican candidate do better by keeping Latino voters, who mostly swing democratic, home. The ad also conveniently ignores the fact that most of what has been keeping the Democrats from moving their agenda forward (including the DREAM Act) has been the Republicans.

Luckily Univision came to its senses and refused to air the ad.

Hispanic Heritage Month: Quienes somos?

It’s Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15-October 15. A month like this, which is meant to celebrate the Latino (Hispanic) community in the US, always sparks folks to write about who the Latino/Hispanic community in the US really is. From a demographic standpoint, we know a lot more about Hispanics in the US thanks to the recent census.

You can access a lot of the data about how the Hispanic population has changed over the last three decades here. The short version is that there are a lot of us, and that by 2050 it’s predicted that everyone one in four people in the US will be Latino. Maybe that explains the upswing in nativist anti-immigrant sentiments? ...
