Announcing the #TimesTen Raffle: Win a dinner with the founders of Feministing!

If you’re a regular reader of the site, you probably know by now that we are raising money to fund a relaunch of Feministing, including a site redesign and sustainable infrastructure.

And to that end, some pretty great news: with 16 days left in our Kickstarter, and thanks to the efforts of over 650 backers, we’ve raised over $28,000 — that’s 93% of our goal!

That’s incredible progress, and we’re so grateful to each of our backers. Seriously, you’re the best. But we don’t only show our thanks with words. To show you how thankful we are for your support, we’ve decided to sweeten the pot a bit.

PolicyMic creates a feminist version of the Google autocomplete ads and proves why we still need feminism

Last month, UN women put together an ad campaign with autocomplete Google searches for women.  The campaign went viral, because the ads are equally brilliant and depressing.

Yesterday, the fab Liz Plank at PolicyMic, put together a similar slide show of images of feminists with autocomplete searches for feminism.  It’s a terrific reimagining of the original campaign because it highlights the goal that feminists are trying to reach and what we are fighting for, and contrasts them with the worst stereotypes that have dogged the movement for decades.  I’m featured in the post alongside our co-founder Jessica Valenti.

Quick Hit: How to write about rape

Jessica published a piece at the Nation offering guidance to writers reporting on rape. She points out some common problems with coverage on sexual violence — including the hilariously/terrifyingly predictable stock photos of “Fun-Loving White Girls Just Asking to be Raped,” and presents four tips for doing it right:

—When an adult is charged with assaulting a minor or someone is someone is accused of assaulting an unconscious person, don’t refer to the crime as “sex with a child” or “sex with an unconscious person.” Call it rape—because that’s what it is . . .

Contraception kills flowers

As absurd as the graphic is, understanding the argument against contraception makes it easier to refute. Know your enemy, right?

Jess Rocks it Out, Talks Purity Balls with Anderson Cooper

Jos mentioned it briefly in Friday’s What We Missed, but did you see our girl Jessica Valenti rock it out on Anderson Cooper last week?

Cooper devoted an episode of his daytime show to purity balls, virginity pledges and the like. Jessica was representing on the show, pushing back against the dangerous rhetoric of other guests like Randy Wilson, the pastor who founded purity balls, and a family that takes their daughter to the balls (including two teenage girls). I think Jess did a great job of communicating clearly and rationally why purity balls hurt women without attacking or shaming the young women who were on stage with her.

Also check out the cameo appearance from Sarah, the 13-year-old girl ...
