Maryland becomes 8th state to pass marriage equality

Gay marriage is coming to Maryland! Last night, the legislature passed the bill and Gov. O’Malley has promised to sign it into law. Maryland is the eighth state to approve gay marriage–and the fourth state one to do so in the last year.

Unfortunately, the law will probably be put to a referendum on the November ballot. (Because here in America, we occasionally like to put our basic civil liberties up for a popular vote–that is, when the government isn’t unilaterally trampling all over them.)

Nevertheless, between this victory and Washington’s new marriage equality law–and despite that one recent setback since New Jersey’s Governor happens to be a raging bigot–there definitely seems to be some serious homomentum these ...

Breaking: Washington legalizes same sex marriage

Washington state Gov. Christine Gregoire has signed a new law making the state the 7th to allow same sex marriage.

Gregoire signed the bill in the state reception room in the Capitol, surrounded by gay rights supporters. “I’m proud our same-sex couples will no longer be treated as separate but equal,” Gregoire said.

It’s a historic moment, but same-sex couples can’t walk down the aisle just yet.

The law takes effect June 7, but opponents are already mounting challenges on multiple fronts.

Opponents are going to try to bring a challenge on the November ballot. Which I imagine would only bring more left leaning voters to the polls.

Marriage is getting gayer every day.

New Jersey’s Senate also approved same sex ...

Friday Feminist Fuck Yeah: GOP Rep speaks out for gay marriage in Washington

Via Shakesville, here’s a speech that will make you cry a bunch of times.

Representative Maureen Walsh is one of two Republicans in the Washington House who voted to pass the same-sex marriage bill on Wednesday. Before the vote, she took the floor to say she was allowing her heart to guide her on this one and described her daughter who came out recently: “She’s still a fabulous human being and she met someone she loves very much. And some day, by God, I want to throw a wedding for that kid. And someday I hope that’s what I can do.”

Washington’s Governor is expected to sign the marriage equality bill into law on Monday. Here’s to #7!

Washington state senate passes gay marriage legislation

We can welcome one more state into the foray of states that believe in basic rights for all their citizens despite sexual preference. Washington’s state senate has passed same-sex marriage legislation.

via Seattle Times,

Lawmakers approved the bill 28 to 21. The measure now heads for the House where it’s expected to easily pass as early as next week. The governor supports the bill as well.

Washington would become the seventh state to legalize gay marriage.

The outcome, while expected, culminates more than decade of work by Sen. Ed Murray, D-Seattle, the prime sponsor of the bill, and the gay and lesbian community.

“A lot of people are just stunned, particularly people my age and older, to think this day would actually come ...

Santorum picks on kids with gay parents, is wrong

Everyone’s abuzz about thought leader Rick Santorum’s latest inflammatory comment. If you’re not sure which one I’m talking about, it may be because he’s been making a lot of them lately.

But this time, I’m not talking about his nonsensical metaphors on gay marriage, or his unpopular views on banning contraception.

Nope, the Santorum comment in question deals with gay parents, and specifically, whether having gay parents has a negative impact on the child. At a recent campaign event at a boarding school in New Hampshire, Santorum told kids, at least three of which had gay parents themselves, that they’d be better off with parents in prison.

The LA Times reports:

For the second time in as many days, Rick Santorum ...

Newt Gingrich becomes the poster boy for adultery– literally!

photo from The Morning Call.

Sure, Rick Perry may have the endorsement of the racist, sadistic, and constitution-defying Sheriff Joe Arpaio. But Newt Gingrich has a very special endorser under his belt (no pun intended):  the pro-adultery dating website Ashleymadison.com. “The world’s leading married dating service for discreet encounters” whose motto is “Life is Short. Have an affair,” has endorsed the Newt in a billboard ad for its site in Bucks County, PA. The Billboard features Gingrich and the text “Faithful Republican, Unfaithful Husband. Welcome to the Ashleymadison.comEra.” If you’re looking for a poster boy– or billboard boy– for adultery, Newt Gingrich is your man! He has admitted to cheating on his wives, he’s on number three now, ...

Gay Vietnam veteran: 1 Mitt Romney: 0

Watch the typically very composed Mitt Romney get all awkward and then try to sneak away when asked about gay marriage by an old white guy who turns out to be gay. Romney’s stereotypes about this guy kinda backfired, huh? Guess you never know when someone is going to totally fail at joining you in bigotry and end up being awesome.

ABC has a longer video clip, including Bob Garon’s reaction to Romney saying he should have less rights than straight people.
