The Best and Worst of the Golden Globes

Last night everyone in the world (read: everyone I follow on Twitter) watched the Golden Globes, which promised to be an important event for women in entertainment with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey hosting and a bunch of talented ladies nominated. In case you had better things to do than watch (read a book, take a nap, feed your cat), we’ve compiled the best and worst moments from the night—from a feminist perspective, of course.

Amy Poehler: the best advice columnist a girl could ask for

Smart Girls at the Party, Amy Poehler’s super cool feminist webseries for girls, is back! The show now has a segment called Ask Amy, a video advice column in which Amy answers questions from girls who write in to her. They seem to be filmed wherever and whenever Poehler has time – on a hotel bed, on set with Paul Rudd, in the bathtub. The first time I saw the segment was when Amy was advising a girl who wants to wear makeup but whose parents don’t want her to wear it yet.

I used to babysit a house full of smart, awesome girls. They played pirates, staged elaborate kitchen science experiments, and read books by the case-full. For half an hour every evening, we sprawled out on the couch and tuned in to the ongoing exploits of a myriad of makeup lacquered, fresh out of elementary school Disney starlets. Those 30 minutes of 100%-geared-towards-girls-programming were chock full of boy craziness, feuding girl friends, and the trials and tribulations of pop super stardom (this was in Hannah Montana’s heyday).
