This #GivingTuesday help turn feminism’s ‘moment’ into a sustainable movement

Feminism is having something of a moment. Beyonce’s in. So is Emma Thompson. And while I’m thrilled to see feminist values reach a wider audience, I also worry that with such popularity come real pitfalls and challenges.

To sustain a meaningful feminist movement, we need more than celebrity mentions and grand speeches (though those help!). We need diverse, radical feminist voices speaking truth to power and connecting their experiences across identities. We need stories of resilient indigenous women standing up to displacement. We need interviews with badass queer migrant feminist poets. We need reality checks when the world feels upside down and videos of world famous pop stars reciting classic feminist poems in response to the devaluation of Black women’s bodies. And we need sex advice. Lots and lots of sex advice.

That’s why this Giving Tuesday, I’m asking you to support independent, feminist media by giving to Feministing.

I’ve been involved with Feministing in some form for over 7 years now. I started blogging for Feministing after I graduated college in 2009, and was a fan of the site before then.

Since then, the site’s evolved a ton. We’ve not only become a more diverse and sustainable space but pioneers in newsroom diversity. Our focus on young feminist voices also makes us unique, and our independence allows us to speak unbridled on the issues we really care about.

Our writers and columnists are thought leaders. They continuously push the envelope forward in terms of feminist dialogue and discussion.  They are cited in everything from Clinton email dumps to forward-thinking explorations on the future of good sex in New York Magazine.

We regularly hear from high school and college students who discovered Feministing after a personal encounter with sexism. They see their experience reflected and validated, and find a community that agrees that patriarchy is not an acceptable status quo. Often, they come for the analysis of Beyonce’s latest music video, and stay for the critique of the prison-industrial-complex.

While Feministing has existed for nearly 12 years as a publication, we only recently began the process of becoming a nonprofit organization. Last year we underwent a major relaunch, expanding our offline activities, building up the organization’s infrastructure and obtaining fiscal sponsorship. We are relying on you, faithful reader, to support our continued growth as well as our ongoing mission to uplift the voices of young feminists, especially of those who have been historically marginalized; raise consciousness; and spur feminist action.

Please, consider giving to us on Giving Tuesday. And while you’re at it, check to see if your company will double your gift.
