Watch: A Ray Rice-inspired makeup tutorial

I’ll admit that the first few times I saw this Ray Rice makeup tutorial shared, I was skeptical. Maybe I just wasn’t quite ready to find the dark humor in a story that, as Mychal wrote last week, has revealed just how much some people hate women. But comedian Megan MacKay’s video is really very well done.

MacKay explains that she uses the YouTube makeup tutorial form for her commentary (she’s also done a great one on Hobby Lobby) because of its clear structure. “For every makeup step, you can create an awesome set-up and a couple of punch lines without losing your audience in the fray,” she say. Her punches are definitely clever, on point, and appropriately scathing–and I appreciate that the video ends on a hopeful note.
