Proposed legislation in New Mexico would imprison rape victims if they get an abortion

From the “we can’t make this shit up” files comes a new scary piece of proposed legislation from New Mexico State Rep. Cathrynn Brown. If passed, HB 206, would force women who were enduring rape trials to carry their pregnancies to term. The justification? An abortion would be “tampering with evidence.”

As Think Progress notes, reporting a rape is hard enough, let alone actually getting to the point where you go to trail–as though that process isn’t trying enough–the trial itself is often a grueling experience. This merely adds insult to injury, an unfortunate marriage of two conservative views on women’s bodies and sexuality a) they deserve to be raped and b) it’s a woman’s obligation to give birth no matter ...

Quick Hit: Victims of revenge porn mount class-action lawsuit against Go Daddy and Texxxan.com

Last week, several women joined a class action lawsuit with the hopes of taking down a prominent revenge porn website. BetaBeat has the scoop:

“Considering the numerous repercussions that keep many victims silent, Ms. Toups’ [one of the members of the class action lawsuit] decision to join the lawsuit under her real name is brave. Many revenge porn victims–including Sarah–are forced to remain anonymous or else face the wrath of vengeful exes who find renewed motivation to post their pictures on porn websites. Because of the intimate nature of the photos, many women are also embarrassed to publicly admit that they were victims, and others are afraid of cyberbullying from the passionate fandoms revenge porn proprietors attract.”

This is a BFD ...

“Women want guns”: In the wake of Sandy Hook, conservatives once again co-opting women’s voices to further agenda

The horrific Sandy Hook shooting has prompted many moments of national and personal reflection. Since the tragedy, the debate over gun control has felt a bit more tangible and urgent, with many leaders and politicians, most notably President Obama, calling for change and enacting stricter laws and policies.

The tragedy has also reignited a conversation here on Feministing about gun violence and masculinity.

But apparently for media outlets like Fox News and the National Review, not much has changed- they are still just as eager to further their conservative pro-gun policies using empty, faux-feminist pro-woman rhetoric, despite the fact that studies overwhelmingly show that women are more supportive of stronger gun laws, consistently and across party lines.

In fact, ...

The one thing ladies love more than yoghurt? Birth control!

I can’t get enough of this commercial for Birth Control on the Bottom, a product that blends the two things that ladies on television love the most: yoghurt and birth control! This is the best critique of birth control advertising since feminist comic genius Sarah Haskin made her own NuvaRing ad.

EMILY’s List Celebrates 2012 Milestones

I was honored to attend the EMILY’s List 2nd Inaugural Brunch over the weekend to not only celebrate the re-election of President Obama, but also the historic victories for women this election cycle.  Thanks to EMILY’s list, during the 2011- 2012 election cycle, we “elect[ed] a historic number of candidates – the only pro-choice Democratic woman governor in the country, 19 new women to the House, six Senate incumbents, and three new Senators – all the first women to represent their states in the Senate. And this cycle, women we’ve helped elect include the first Hindu and first female combat veterans to serve in the House, the first openly gay Senator, and the first Asian American woman ...

How to deal with a mansplainer starring Hillary Clinton in gifs

Sometimes you don’t realize how #bawse somebody is, until you make it into a gif.

So after Secretary of State Hillary Clinton smacked down the Senate and the House yesterday, it occurred to me that what made it magical is that it is an instructional video on how to deal with a mansplainer. And of course, any good tutorial needs to be broken down into gifs for emphasis.

Ladies and gentlemen, “How to deal with a mansplainer starring Hillary Clinton.”

Step 1: Raise your hands up like, “Whoa you guys you can’t be serious.”

Step 2: Make sure to emphasize your points by counting with your hands so that simple tea party Senator mansplainer understands.  Mansplainers like visuals.
