What We Missed

Listen to our own Anna discussing gender and racial diversity on TV.

7 ways women and girls are stereotyped, sexualized, and underrepresented on screen.

“Should I tell my infertile Asian wife that I want all-white babies?” Uhm, maybe you should just tell her that she married a racist.

Harvard College has approved its first BDSM Group.

“Now two of the three are women — at least one of the three are women. They both think they are trying to recover from the war on women.” Joe Scarborough and guests explain the real motivation behind taking Susan Rice down.

Have a great weekend!

Feminists Will Probably Not Marry Any of You

First we had College Humor’s “Gay Men Will Marry Your Girlfriends.” Then came the “straight men” response. Now the inevitable “Gay Women Will Marry Your Boyfriends” has debuted. These videos profess to support marriage equality: the original gag was that, if queer men can’t marry their boyfriends, they’ll marry straight guys’ girlfriends in retaliation. However, each new YouTube sensation traffics in such tired stereotypes of gender and sexuality that I have to say to all involved with these clips: Feminists Will Probably Not Marry Any of You. We don’t even want to hang out.

Caricatures can definitely be used to skewer gendered expectations, but these videos don’t critique stereotypes through campy enactment: they reinforce them. After all, the ...

Friday Feminist Fuck You: Hunter Moore

This is Hunter Moore. When he was broke and sitting on his parents’ couch in Sacramento, he founded the now-defunct site Is Anyone Up so he and his buddies could “post pictures of girls we were fucking at the time.” It grew to be an infamous “revenge porn” site where users submitted nude photos of their exes before shutting down amid legal troubles earlier this year.

Now he’s back with a new site that is basically the same–but worse. While the user-submitted photos on Is Anyone Up included the person’s name and links to social media profiles, the new site will also include a field for exact address.

In case it was at all unclear that the point of this new feature is to ...

Breaking: Dominique Strauss-Kahn to settle out of court with Nafissitou Diallo

The French press is reporting that the former IMF chief will be settling out of court with Nafissitou Diallo, the NYC based hotel maid who has pursued a case against him for sexual assault, if she drops the civil suit–to the tune of 6 million.

“Details of the deal, which comes after prosecutors dropped related criminal charges last year, weren’t immediately known and likely will be veiled by a confidentiality agreement. That could prevent the two from speaking publicly about a May 2011 encounter that she called a brutally sudden attack and he termed a consensual “moral failing.”

Lawyers for Strauss-Kahn and the housekeeper, Nafissatou Diallo, made the as-yet-unsigned agreement within recent days, with Bronx Supreme Court Justice Douglas McKeon ...

What We Missed

A 17-year-old black teen was shot and killed by an older white man in Florida bothered by his loud music.

In other unbearable news, a 15-year-old Afghan girl was beheaded for rejecting a marriage proposal.

Unless a judge acts to block the law, Mississippi’s last abortion clinic will be shut down.

In Sweden, the infamous photo of Rihanna is being used to “promote” a Chris Brown concert.

Seventeen magazine provides a BMI calculator to teens–and tells them being underweight is healthy.

Gently, like a good friend, the Atlantic tells women they can stop pretending to be feminists now.

Our co-founder Jessica Valenti on likeability.

Support the striking fast-food workers in New York City

Photo via Sarah Jaffe.

Fast-food workers at dozens of chains in NYC are walking out today in what is the first step in the “biggest effort to unionize fast-food workers ever undertaken in the United States.” They are demanding a raise from near-minimum wages to $15 an hour and the right to form a union. The walk-out–which includes McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Domino’s, Taco Bell and others–is the first-ever multi-restaurant strike by fast-food workers in the country.

The median hourly wage for food service and prep workers is a $8.90 an hour in NYC. And it’s not like these workers are just teenagers hoping for some extra cash; the median age is over 28. Women make up two-thirds of the ...

Project Unspoken Part 2: “There is nothing that you can do to ask for it.”

Recently I posted a terrific video project created by Caleb Peng called Project Unspoken – out of Emory University – which interviewed a number of young people about harassment and violence against women. Here’s Part 2 which interviews more folks asking them whether they know someone who has been the victim of sexual assault. It’s a powerful video because it shows that basically everyone knows someone impacted.

This is something that I’ve written about on this site before. Survivors are everywhere and you may even be one or know one. It’s important that we acknowledge that it’s a common problem first in order to fix it. All too often people think it’s something that happens to someone else and the key here ...
