I don’t know about you, but I’m really feeling this trailer. Baz Lurhmann’s signature penchant for assigning an anachronistic soundscape to re-imagined and vividly colorful fictional histories had me at beat drop from Jay and Ye’s No Church in The Wild. That track is perfect for setting the tone for the uninitiated; a dark and sexy accompaniment to what —we who never lived through the decadent bacchanal— known as the Jazz Age. More than anything, it made me want to re-read F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece. It was my summer reading from 2002, a quiet book about a society’s unraveling at the height of wealth and opulence, a post war America lumbering its way into modern age. Mad Men Midweek Fix: Three Women

As always, this post contains a bunch of spoilers.

Joan’s deal

I feel like all season I’ve been the one saying, “Oooh, poor Pete! I feel so sorry for him!” and “Oooh Roger, he’s so damn charming!” So, for the record, fuck them. I can’t believe what a weasel Pete was–although it probably shouldn’t have been surprising. And Roger’s reaction to the proposition was just so sad. (Roger, who is the father of Joan’s baby, for fuck’s sake!) And the fact that Joan asked specifically if Roger had participated in the discussion made it all the more sad.

I haven’t read all that many other reactions, but it seems like some viewers didn’t find it believable that Joan would do ...

MA federal appeals court rules DOMA unconstitutional

A Massachusetts federal appeals court ruled DOMA unconstitutional today, setting the stage for the U.S. Supreme Court to hear a case on same-sex marriage for the first time since Massachusetts was the first state to make it legal 9 years ago.

The state’s attorney general Martha Coakley praised the ruling in a statement:

Today’s landmark ruling makes clear once again that DOMA is a discriminatory law for which there is no justification. It is unconstitutional for the federal government to create a system of first- and second-class marriages, and it does harm to families in Massachusetts every day. All Massachusetts couples should be afforded the same rights and protections under the law, and we hope that this decision will be the final ...

The president and first lady are a very likable couple with a number of cute public displays of affection to choose from. But I have now discovered my favorite! In a recent interview with People, Michelle Obama reveals that she and the president have a bedtime ritual.
