A dose of support for young mamas during Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month

May is National Teen Pregnancy Prevention month, which means that throughout the month you can expect to see campaigns and coverage dedicated pretty much exclusively to telling you how young women who are mothers are ruining America for all of us. But we’re not into the shaming of young mothers here, and we are very happy to give you a good dose of dignity for young mamas.

Wendy Davis was a teen mother and is changing the world

Remember those awful ads from the Candies Foundation that implied that young mothers can’t change the world? Well, of course we knew they were ridiculous, but this was just too good not to share – Wendy Davis, the Lebron James of filibustering, was a teen mom:

She began working after school at age 14 to help support her single mother and three siblings, according to her campaign website. “By 19, Wendy was a single mother herself, working two jobs to make ends meet in hopes of creating a better life for her young daughter.”

Young mamas push back against the Candie’s Foundation teen pregnancy ads

Remember these awful ads from the Candies Foundation? Well young mamas are pushing back, and are demanding that Candie’s stop shaming young parents:

When the Candie’s Foundation launched a teen pregnancy prevention campaign with the tagline, “You’re supposed to be changing the world… not diapers,” I was outraged by their attempts to shame young parents, people like me. Will the teen mom shaming ever stop?

May is National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month, which basically means it’s the season for teen mom shaming. And damn if the Candie’s Foundation doesn’t deliver! On May 1 they revealed their new celebrity-endorsed PSAs, which include lots of messages that provide the super useful combo of shame and no actual helpful information whatsoever. I want to throw up all over these: Did you know being a mother totally sucks??? What’s interesting to me about that one is that it’s actually not specific to young people at all – infants have to eat every couple hours regardless of how old their mother is. Does the Candie’s foundation think that motherhood just sucks in general? And OMG, this one:
