Experiencing online harassment? There’s a form for that.

ICYMI, women face terrible harassment online, and Twitter is no exception. GamerGate is just the most recent and most visible chapter of long-unchecked online abuse against women — particularly trans women, women of color, and women from other marginalized communities — but social media companies have been slow to step in.

The three companies ignoring the #FBrape campaign

As was noted in yesterday’s Daily Feminist Cheat Sheet, Women, Action, and the Media (WAM!) launched a great social media initiative on Tuesday, taking on gender-based hate on Facebook. Specifically, WAM and other great organizations are “calling on Facebook users to contact advertisers whose ads on Facebook appear next to content that targets women for violence, to ask these companies to withdraw from advertising on Facebook until you take the above actions to ban gender-based hate speech on your site.”  Several companies have responded to the#FBrape campaign and are considering pulling their ads. Make sure you check them out, tweet your support and urge them to do ...

WMC releases media guide for gender neutral coverage of women candidates and politicians

Throughout the years, we’ve written pretty extensively about sexist media coverage and the chilling effect it has on women-identified candidates and politicians.

That’s why I’m so thrilled about the Women’s Media Center’s newly released Media Guide for its Name It. Change It. Project. The Guide (click for PDF ) works to identify, prevent and end sexist media coverage of women candidates and politicians.

The guide is specially formatted to teach members of the media how to avoid injecting sexism into their own coverage and how to spot sexism in others’. And it’s pretty rad!

The guide is chock-full of research, which I think makes it a strong and highly useful document. One section in particular stands out, which ...

New Yorkers: Boogie down with us at WAM!Prom 2 next weekend!

Several years ago when Feministing was just a toddler, Samhita, Jessica and myself went to the Women, Action and the Media conference in Cambridge, MA for the weekend — I think it was the first time I met so many people working in social justice and media in one place, and it was a completely exhilarating experience. The conference then, and this organization today, brings to light seriously important discussions around gender justice in media.

Oh, and then there’s the feminist dance parties. That weekend was also the first time I met many of my dear friends in the blogosphere today, where we busted moves all night and celebrated the incredibly hard and often-emotionally difficult work that ...

Come WAM! It Up With Me This Weekend

Ah, Saturdays. Ludacris thinks they’re good for “sticky icky cky [oh ohhhh]”. Rebecca Black doesn’t think they’re quite as good as the day that comes before them.

As for me, I think they’re a great time for hangin with dozens of feminist media makers to talk blogging, activism, feminism, journalism, and everything in between.

That’s right, folks. Vanessa mentioned this in Monday’s “What We Missed“, but it bears repeating: WAM! It Yourself has begun this week, and we couldn’t be more stoked. I’ll be speaking on a Feminist Blogging panel on Saturday along with Andrea Plaid of Racialicious, Irin Carmon of Jezebel, and Amanda Marcotte of Pandagon.

So whether you blog, write, report, tweet, make films ...
