No One is Disposable: #JusticeForJane and why dignity is a human right

As of this writing, seventy one days have passed since Jane Doe was unjustly incarcerated in the Connecticut State Prison by a government body charged with protecting her—a vulnerable, sixteen year old trans girl.

To recap her situation: Jane Doe was a ward of Connecticut State’s Department of Children and Families (DCF) for much of her life, but according to the DCF’s commissioner, Joette Katz, became violent and unruly. Her transgender status also, allegedly, complicated her placement in alternate facilities. So, the DCF availed itself of statute 17a-12: an obscure law that allows it to place children in the Connecticut State prison system.

Congrats to the first trans Homecoming King in North Carolina

I don’t know what your experience was in high school, but when I look back on mine I vividly remember my emotional state fluidly moving between total acceptance and terror to step foot inside the building. I did ok for myself, but I certainly wasn’t Homecoming Queen (which could have something to do with the fact that I only attending one of four homecomings during my stint). High school is a mixed bag like that. I remember high school being a place where you couldn’t count on your peers to embrace you all the time, especially not if you were operating outside of traditionally defined gender binaries.

The next Prop 8? Opponents submit signatures to repeal transgender students’ rights in CA

In August, California passed a law to protect public school student’s rights to participate in activities like sports and use facilities based on their gender identity. This is an important and groundbreaking step to make sure trans and gender non-conforming students have full access to the public education that is there right. So of course religious conservatives are trying to repeal the law, because coming after our children is clearly the Christian thing to do.

Girl Scouts of Colorado support transgender youth

Here’s yet another reason to love the Girl Scouts. Recently, a young girl was denied enrollment in a Colorado troop because she is trans. Via GLAAD comes this statement released by Girl Scouts of Colorado in response:

Girl Scouts is an inclusive organization and we accept all girls in Kindergarten through 12th grade as members. If a child identifies as a girl and the child’s family presents her as a girl, Girl Scouts of Colorado welcomes her as a Girl Scout.
