Don’t make me a prop in your feminism

A few weeks ago I was running around the SXSW Interactive conference in Austin, supporting a book I’ve been working on for the past year. The book, The Athena Doctrine, will come out on April 16, and I’m pretty excited about it.

It’s a labor of love — after months of research and travel, my partners (both men) and I have concluded that feminine thinking is crucial to successful modern leadership. We surveyed 64,000 people and traveled more than 100,000 miles around the globe, asking people to group traits such as empathy, communicativeness, intuition, patience, assertiveness, openness, and honesty as “feminine” or “masculine,” then asking which of those qualities were most important in leaders. Wednesday Weigh In: ‘White Male Nerd Culture’ Edition

Over at Salon, Irin Carmon examines the “white nerd male culture” after this week’s #SXSW attempt to diversify led to sometimes awkward results:

On Monday, an enthusiastic white man congratulated film blogger and software development manager Malaika Paquiot-Mose for how well she’d done on the South by Southwest panel that had just ended.

It’s that time of year where I run off to nerdy spring break in Austin, TX to hang out with geeks and eat breakfast tacos. This year the feminist offerings of SXSW are extensive–the conference just gets more and more progressive every year.

Punk band Screeching Weasel breaks up after frontman punches two women at SXSW

*Trigger warning.*

Ah, South by Southwest. The two week-long interactive conference and festival is well known for its music, technology, film, parties, and….violence against women?!

Sigh.

Last week during a show at SXSW last week, Screeching Weasel frontman Ben Weseal (real name Ben Foster) punched two female audience members in the face.

And late last night, the four other member of the band issued a heartfelt resignation, condemning their frontman’s actions, including his violence on stage, as “shameful and embarrassing”.

I wish I could say I was more surprised that this hasn’t gotten much attention.
