The Academic Feminist Presents: Marisa Irabli and Feministing’s Student Series!

Here at Feministing, two of our great loves are academic feminism and young feminists. Now we’re bringing the two together: today’s Academic Feminist column kicks off a series of interviews with students about their college theses or final projects that explore topics related to gender and sexuality. The first interview in our series comes from Marisa Irabli.

Marisa Irabli is a recent Rutgers University and Douglass Residential College graduate (May 2014), having received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, with additional concentrations in Women’s and Gender Studies and Women’s Leadership. She is currently pursuing a Master of Arts/Certificate of Advanced Study in School Psychology at Alfred University.

Utah high school photoshops female students’ yearbook photos to show less skin

Administrators at a Utah high school photoshopped the yearbook photos of many female students to show less skin. Phew! With all those exposed shoulders (gasp!) and clavicles (oh my!), the yearbook could have ended up looking like a goddamn Playboy!

Julie Zeilinger’s College 101: A Girl’s Guide to Freshman Year is the book I wish I read four years ago when I started college. The guide advises incoming freshman on how to navigate the confusing new experiences that come with being a freshman and a woman in college — namely, the ways in which tricky roommates, demanding academics, rising debt, insufficient mental health resources, and unfamiliar social pressures interact and intersect with sexism. The next Prop 8? Opponents submit signatures to repeal transgender students’ rights in CA

In August, California passed a law to protect public school student’s rights to participate in activities like sports and use facilities based on their gender identity. This is an important and groundbreaking step to make sure trans and gender non-conforming students have full access to the public education that is there right. So of course religious conservatives are trying to repeal the law, because coming after our children is clearly the Christian thing to do.

UC Davis Chancellor apologizes but will not resign

If you missed the chilling video of police pepper spraying peaceful protesters at UC Davis last week, you can catch it in the clip above. UC Davis Chancellor Katehi has apologized for the actions of the police and wants a full investigation of what happened. Despite calls for her resignation, Katehi will not resign, but says she is committed to making sure this doesn’t happen again. She also put the police chief on leave. In the above interview, it is clear her apology is tinged with a clear frustration at the avenues protesters are taking on campus–peaceful, non-violent, public demonstrations.
