Santorum Maddow

Quote of the day: Maddow to Santorum: “You’re fundamentally wrong on civics”

In a simultaneously amazing and immensely trying eight minutes, Rachel Maddow schools Rick Santorum in civics, and his past comments about LGBT people and our “lifestyles. ”From this interview, outlets have begun to report that Santorum has “softened” on LGBT issues, but in his discussion with Maddow, it is only clear that he has started watching what he says on camera about LGBT issues.

Obama opposes Boy Scouts gay ban, homophobes support it

In a pre-Superbowl interview President Obama came out against the Boy Scouts of America’s ban on “gays.” CBS’s Scott Pelley said, “next week the board of the Boy Scouts of America is going to vote on whether to end their national ban on gays in scouting. Should scouting be open to the gays?” And Obama’s response was unequivocal: “Yes.” When asked, “why so,” Obama explained,

“My attitude is that gays and lesbians should have access and opportunity the same way everybody else does, in every institution and walk of life. And The Scouts are a great institution that are promoting young people and exposing them to opportunities and leadership that will serve people for the rest of their lives. And I think ...

Funny or Die video gives Rick Santorum a taste of his own anti-choice medicine

Check out this hilarious video, Rick Santorum Aborts Presidential Campaign, in which Ashley Judd, Michelle Trachtenberg, Katy Mixon, and Eliza Coupe counsel Santorum, “If you weren’t mature enough to carry your campaign to term, you shouldn’t have engaged in the risky behavior that began it.”

Breaking: Rick Santorum suspends presidential campaign

Ding dong, the dick is done:

Facing mounting pressure and the prospect of an embarrassing loss in his home state of Pennsylvania next week, Rick Santorum suspended his campaign for the presidency today.

“We made a decision over the weekend that this presidential race is over for me,” he said at a press conference in Pennsylvania moments ago. “We will suspend our campaign effective today.”

While folks may look back almost fondly on Santorum’s race as “that wacky conservative” who was to the nth extreme (and boy, did he give us content), let’s not forget how alarming it is that he came in second to Romney — his extreme social conservative ...

Southern Tuesday: Election Recap

Mitt Romney still can’t close the deal with GOP primary voters.

It feels like I’ve been writing this same line over and over the past few months.  Last night on Southern Tuesday, Mississippi and Alabama cast votes for their Republican nominee.  Rick Santorum came out on top in both contests. Newt Gingrich (who overperforms in the southern states) came in second.  And Mitt Romney, third in both states.

At this stage in the game, 27 states have voted.  Mitt Romney has been considered the frontrunner the entire time — with a few moments of weakness when other candidates surged ahead temporarily, but he has significantly more money and his SuperPAC floods the airwaves in each state with negative ads attacking opponents. ...

Rick Santorum: Single mothers “breed” criminals

From the Rick Santorm archives, new foolishness emerges. As unearthed by the good people at Mother Jones, in 1994 when Santorum was running for Senate in Pennsylvania he boldly asserted that single moms were the downfall of the United States. At a town hall in Clairton, Pennsylvania, Santorum said:

“Most people agree a continuation of the current [welfare] system will be the ruination of this country. We are seeing it. We are seeing the fabric of this country fall apart, and it’s falling apart because of single moms.”

Santorum made this point in the context of government spending and moralizing about women’s life choices, but he went further to make a ridiculous assertion about single motherhood and crime, telling the Philadelphia Inquirer that ...

Super Tuesday recap: Mitt rolls on

Last night was hardly the decisive Super Tuesday victory of years past, but it seems this morning, after last night’s Ohio haze, that Mitt Romney has pulled ahead in the Republican primary.

Here’s how it broke down last night: Mitt Romney won Alaska, Idaho, Massachusetts, Ohio (by a very small margin, it seems), Vermont, Virgina and Wyoming. Rick Santorum won North Dakota, Oklahoma and Tennessee. And Newt Gingrich, making a point of not bowing out, won Georgia.

So what does this mean, other than the fact that this interminable GOP primary season rolls on? By most accounts, it’s becoming increasingly evident that Mitt Romney will be the Republican nominee, though likely not formally and finally for some time yet. ...

Santorum worries that female soldiers can’t hack it on the front lines because of all the “emotions”

Yesterday, the Pentagon announced plans to allow women into more front-line, combat jobs. The Service Women’s Action Network expressed disappointment that women will still be barred from serving as infantry, armor, and special operations forces, but said that the new rules were a big step in the right direction. As Adam Weinstein writes, “full gender equity in the ranks is no longer a question of ‘if’ but ‘when.'”

But enough of all the forward-thinking nonsense by people who know what they’re talking about! I know you’re all dying to hear what Rick Santorum thinks about all this. Via Politico:

I do have concerns about women in frontline combat. I think that can be a very compromising situation, where people ...
