Marriage equality’s hip hop theme song

The rap duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis has broken records with their hits “Thrift Shop” and “Can’t Hold Us.” And now, with their pro-marriage equality hit “Same Love,” which features out lesbian Mary Lambert, they’re shattering stereotypes.

Just as “Same Love” supported this movement, the recent Supreme Court rulings on DOMA and Prop 8 are helping the song become an even greater hit. The song hit the charts in February, when several states were voting on marriage equality and the Supreme Court was considering challenges to DOMA and Prop 8. Wednesday, when the Supreme Court ruled on  both cases, “Same Love” rose to No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, up from No. ...

Gay Judge’s Prop 8 Ruling Sustained

Yesterday a federal judge upheld the ruling– issued by a gay judge– that struck down Prop 8, California’s ban on same-sex marriage. You’ll remember that Judge Vaughn Walker ruled that Prop 8 was unconstitutional back in August, and has also been in a relationship for 10 years with another man.

Yesterday’s case is significant not only because it ensures that the discriminatory and shameful ban has no place in California law, but also because it sets a good precedent for preventing identity politics from interfering in court cases.

From the NYT:

“This decision is in line with decisions in the areas of gender, race and ethnicity and religious background,” Mr. Boutrous said. “This is a powerful statement ...

Quick Hit: Latin America Ahead of U.S. on Same-Sex Marriage

Amidst all the hateful hype surrounding Prop 8 in CA, it can be easy to lose perspective on the same sex marriage “debate” and forget that it’s actually quite a straightforward issue, a matter of common sense and a basic human right. An opinion piece in today’s LA Times gives us a much-needed reminder of this, providing some perspective with the bold headline “Latin America ahead of U.S. on same-sex marriage.”

The article is definitely worth a read. It points out that countries like Mexico and Argentina have been able to recognize “that religion and civil law have different roles to perform in marriage, something absent in the debate in the U.S.” and highlights some of the most ...

Breaking: Prop 8 judge rules to lift stay, same-sex couples can marry next week

U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker, who ruled that Prop 8 was unconstitutional last week, just ruled that same-sex marriages should resume immediately in California, but has put the order on hold until August 18th to give the opposition an opportunity to file appeal.

This means that gay and lesbian couples in the state of California should be able to marry by Wednesday of next week, with the hope that no challenges are made or are successful before then. Lambda Legal states:

“To maintain the stay, the Ninth Circuit will have to find that Prop 8’s proponents are likely ...

Breaking: Judge rules Proposition 8 unconstitutional

From NY Mag:

This afternoon U.S District Judge Vaugh Walker ruled in the case brought before him by lawyers Ted Olson and David Boies, which argued that the Proposition 8 ballot initiative denying marriage rights to same sex couples in California was unconstitutional. In a decision just handed down to lawyers for both sides, Walker ruled in that Proposition 8 is “unconstitutional under both the due process and equal protection clauses.” The court, therefore, “orders entry of judgment permanently enjoining its enforcement.” We’re staying tuned for more updates and details on the 136-page decision, but these two sentences from the conclusion are critical:

Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in ...
