Don’t miss Melissa Harris Perry slam the ‘unacceptability’ theory of black hair

Remember Tianna Parker, the 7 year old girl from Tulsa, Oklahoma who was sent home from school because of  school policy considering “dreadlocks, afros, mohawks, and other faddish styles” to be “unacceptable”? Melissa Harris-Perry brings some much-needed perspective to the issue:

“For the record, Tiana, your hair is not distracting, unacceptable, a fad or wrong. Tiana, your hair is wonderful. You come from a people with a beautiful array of styles and textures that range from short to big afros that come in colors from gray to black, curly naturals that spiral every which way just because they can.”

Over 300 Mormons march in Utah Gay Pride Parade

It’s so refreshing when religious people actually ask themselves What Would Jesus Do. I’m no theologian, but I’m pretty sure he would walk with and not rally against people celebrating people’s right to be and love as they choose. So, I was thrilled to see that over 300 members of the Church of Latter Day Saints attended the Utah Gay Pride Parade on Sunday.

The group Mormons Building Bridges, started a few weeks ago by Erika Munson, a mom of five from Sandy, Utah,  posted the following message on their Facebook event page.

The Wednesday Weigh-In: PRIDE Edition!

As Miriam noted, June is LQBTQ Pride Month in many places around the world, generally marked by parades, celebrations, demonstrations, and acts of solidarity for people in the LGBTQ community and allies. Here in NY, it could be made extra sweet if we pass marriage equality this week.
