Years ago, my doctor prescribed oral contraceptives after I was hospitalized from a ruptured ovarian cyst. I had insurance through my employer at the time and paid a modest monthly copay of $10. When we switched insurance plans during an enrollment period, my coverage lapsed and I had to pay out of pocket for the medication. The snafu was quickly resolved but it was important information, a quick glimpse of the kind of expense I’d incur if I didn’t have a job, or the kind of job that would allow me to contact someone without taking time off work or fearing retribution from my employer to resolve the matter. New report shows how the principle of “personhood” is already criminalizing pregnancy in the US

Regina McKnight was charged with homicide by child abuse after the state said her cocaine use caused her to have a stillbirth. It was later determined that the stillbirth was due to an infection, and her conviction was overturned–after she’d already served eight years in prison.

Laura Pemberton wanted to have a vaginal birth after having had a previous c-section, despite the advice of her doctors. She was in labor at her house, when her doctors sought a court order and dispatched the sheriff to forcibly bring her to the hospital. After an emergency hearing in which she had no legal representation, she was forced to undergo the surgery.

New Romney ad geared toward women is a joke

It just gets better. This election season has been like a bloopers reel for a real election, as Romney’s “strategy” unfolds before us. Let’s put aside that in the last two days alone he said half the country is a bunch of ungrateful serfs and said that there is “no hope for Palestine,” his continued attempt at reaching lady voters baffles. This week, the Romney campaign puts out a video targeting the ladiez titled, “hey daughter.”

So is that supposed to be a daughter? Or a daughter’s daughter? I’m so confused!

Texas court rules funds can be cut from Planned Parenthood

While we were Akin-izing (agonizing over Akin), the war on women’s access to basic health care was not asleep. A scary day in Texas, when an appellate court ruled yesterday that the state can strip Planned Parenthood of all funding as they find ways to “protect life” and remove all state funding from groups that provide abortion. The problem is, by taking Planned Parenthood out of the Women’s Health Program, they are mostly stripping funding for cancer screenings, birth control and other gynecological screenings. An estimated 130,000 poor women in Texas could lose access to affordable health care.
