Yesterday was Equal Pay Day, which marked how far into the year the average American woman must work to earn what her male counterpart earned last year. The gender gap stands at 78 cents to the dollar and hasn’t narrowed in the last decade. As Maya highlighted, at this rate we won’t achieve pay equality until 2058.

South Korea will hold presidential elections tomorrow. For the first time in the history of its democracy, it is possible that the country will elect a woman. If Park Guen-hye, the frontrunner for the presidency, wins as expected, it would be the first time in a millennia that a woman has helmed the country, which for all its modernity, remains deeply paternalistic.
