Pussy Riot, New Yorkers and jury oppose the conviction of NYPD assault victim Cecily McMillan

Last week, a jury convicted Cecily McMillan of getting her breast grabbed and bruised by an NYPD officer, getting shoved by the officer and then having the nerve to have a seizure in front of several police officers, who responded by doing absolutely nothing for several minutes (link is to a pdf). The conviction has drawn criticism and outcry. Formerly incarcerated Pussy Riot* members are speaking out on behalf of McMillan, with whom they identify and whom they visited in jail over the weekend. Yesterday, New York residents and elected officials held a protest against McMillan’s conviction. But what is much more surprising, and revealing, is the fact that the very jury ...

Cop testifies against woman he assaulted

(Transcript at DemocracyNow!)

This was a big week in the trial against Cecily McMillan. You may have heard about this case before: A cop grabbed the Occupier’s breast hard enough to leave a hand print and then shoved her strongly enough to leave her in a seizure for which she would be hospitalized. And she, not the police officer, is the one on trial.

AIG CEO says bonuses backlash is the same as racist lynching, is the worst

Katie mentioned this in the Daily Feminist Cheat Sheet yesterday, but we thought it deserved its own post. AIG CEO Robert Benmosche was recently interviewed by the Wall Street Journal about controversial bonuses given out by his company.  You know, when AIG gave $165 million in bonuses to members of their financial products division after the government bailed them out because members of their financial products division nearly destroyed the company and contributed to crashing the economy. Benmosche had the perfect analogy for public reaction to the bonuses. From Huffington Post:

He told The Wall Street Journal that the outcry over AIG’s bonuses “was intended to stir public anger, to get everybody out there with ...

#OccupySandy illustrates the best of humanity

After catastrophic superstorm Sandy hit New York city and left millions without power and many homeless, not only did the federal, state, and local government swiftly respond but the Occupy movement sprung into action with flexible and swift assistance for those impacted.

Occupy Sandy organizers all throughout the city have been collecting donations, putting together both money, food, and other items for their fellow New Yorkers harmed by the storm.  Occupy Sandy has already raised well over $200,000 in relief.  The Occupy movement is perhaps best suited for this type of streamlined and effective relief effort because of an infrastructure that was already set up during Occupy Wall Street.  By using their website and the hash tag #occupysandy anyone who wants ...

Who says #occupy can’t be funny? Not Nato Green

The one-year anniversary of Occupy Wall Street is a time for reflection… and laughter. Check out Nato Green (from Laughter Against the Machine and a writer for Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell) talking about the Occupy Movement, drum circles (of course) and poop.

What will it take for #Occupy to enter the mainstream political conversation?

Early this morning protesters gathered down on Wall Street near Zucotti Park to not just commemorate, but reinvigorate the Occupy Movement. Contrary to popular belief, Occupy itself didn’t actually die down on it’s own volition, but was instead shut down by the police.

While people are still organizing protests and meetings including this mornings #S17 action, Occupy encampments and meetings were shut down or infiltrated from the inside out. Nathan Schneider writes at the Nation,

After big expectations for a “99 Percent Spring,” the Occupy movement has had a trying summer. The wave of evictions that ended most of the country’s 24/7 occupations in late fall was only the beginning of the crackdown. Meetings and actions over the winter ...

Occupy Wall Street 6 month anniversary met with NYPD brutality

This past Saturday was the 6-month anniversary of the protests of Occupy Wall Street in Liberty Plaza/Zuccotti Park. About 300 people had gathered, and were met by the NYPD who forcefully cleared the park. From Sarah Jaffe for Alternet:

It was a beautiful scene in Zuccotti Park–clearly Liberty Plaza again–on Saturday night around 11:00. Giant banners unfurled along the edges, declaring that Occupy Wall Street was back in town.

The only tent in sight, besides a makeshift one already torn down once by about eight police officers as protesters went to check out a bagpipe procession heading up Cedar Street, was a small illuminated one held aloft on a stick with the words “You can’t evict an idea” painted on its ...

1)Up with Chris Hayes drops systemic analysis on Penn State

Because the post highlights a much-needed critical, thoughtful perspective, which challenges the sensationalism and irresponsible journalism which dominates our media and manages to focus on2) because Jos becomes the 438th person I know to claim Chris Hayes as her boyfriend.

Chris Hayes, my morning talk show boyfriend, dedicated an hour of his Saturday show to the Penn State sexual abuse scandal. Hayes is joined by a great panel: The New Yorker writer Rick Hertzberg, University of Texas visiting scholar Victoria M. Defrancesco Soto, former Brooklyn District Attorney and Congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman, MSNBC political analyst Michael Eric Dyson, and The Nation‘s sports writer Dave Zirin. They look at the way powerful institutions breed this sort of corruption and evil, drawing links with ...
