#TransHealthcareNow: Why now is the time for the most vital form of trans inclusion

Conferences tend to be rather staid affairs that are rigidly structured by lovelessly adumbrated agendas. Pre-planned panels and speeches dominate those agendas. Thus, when someone goes off-script somehow, the results are bound to be fascinating.

Last Thursday the Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP) in New York City provided a happy off-ramp from the script of HX Refactored, a healthcare conference taking place in Manhattan, when they participated in a direct action on stage to advocate for trans-inclusive Medicaid coverage in New York. A banner was proudly unfurled, speeches were made, and everything flew off script—to the applause of many in the audience, no less, a hopeful sign if ever there was one. The state’s new health commissioner, Howard Zucker, bore ...

Pussy Riot, New Yorkers and jury oppose the conviction of NYPD assault victim Cecily McMillan

Last week, a jury convicted Cecily McMillan of getting her breast grabbed and bruised by an NYPD officer, getting shoved by the officer and then having the nerve to have a seizure in front of several police officers, who responded by doing absolutely nothing for several minutes (link is to a pdf). The conviction has drawn criticism and outcry. Formerly incarcerated Pussy Riot* members are speaking out on behalf of McMillan, with whom they identify and whom they visited in jail over the weekend. Yesterday, New York residents and elected officials held a protest against McMillan’s conviction. But what is much more surprising, and revealing, is the fact that the very jury ...

Photo(s) of the Day: Domestic workers at work

The “hidden” nature of domestic work is what first drew Ellen Jacob to begin her photo series, “Substitutes.” For the series, Jacobs photographed and interviewed nannies living and working in New York City, increasing the visibility of work that is too often relegated to the privacy of individual homes. What follows are some beautiful images of daily life while caring for the children of others.

Quick hit: Poll finds most New Yorkers don’t want to overturn gay marriage law

In a poll of 600 New Yorkers it turns out a larger percentage (55%) of people support gay marriage than oppose it (37%).

via CNN.

And while opponents filed a lawsuit in late July to overturn the new law, about six in 10 voters statewide said they want to keep same-sex marriage legal.

When looking at political party affiliation, 72 percent of Democratic voters believe the law should stay in place, while Republicans are divided between 48 percent of those who want it overturned and 47 percent who think it should remain in effect.

The poll reveals age differences, as well. About 62 percent of those under the age of 45 support the law, compared to about half of New Yorkers older ...

NYC to Require Sex Ed in Public Schools

As the NY Times reports, starting in the upcoming school year, for the first time in nearly two decades, students in New York City’s public middle and high schools will be required to take sex education classes. Previously, NY had been one of 12 states that required H.I.V. education only.

I love that some of the momentum behind this decision was explicitly tied to Mayor Bloomberg’s recent announcement that he will put his own money towards programs and policies that address the needs of minority youth in NYC. Hell yeah, cause we matter and we are currently under-served!! (I’m still classified as a “youth” somewhere, right?)

A few months ago, I gave an interview to the “Where ...

Breaking: Gay marriage passes New York Senate hurdle

After many, many days of negotiations and close-calls for a vote, same-sex marriage finally passed the NY Senate tonight by a close margin of 33-29.

The bill went straight from the Assembly to a floor vote, and was decided after a number of religious exemptions that were agreed upon by New York legislators. Now, the bill will go to Governor Cuomo’s desk, where he will sign it.

This win represents another demonstration of the changing tide for LGBT rights — particularly when it comes to marriage.

Jewish mothers lobby for right to nag all their kids about getting married

Even the gay ones. This lovely ad from New Yorkers United for Marriage stars the Blumenthals, a New York couple who have one straight son, who is married, and one gay son, who is not legally allowed to get married. And the Blumenthals want to change this. Because Jewish mothers like to bug their kids about hurrying up and getting married and giving me some grandchildren already before I die because I’m not going to be around forever you know my health isn’t what it used to be, and right now the New York state legislature is standing in the way of that. Despite new data from Quinnipiac showing 58% of New Yorkers support same sex marriage.
