Leith, North Dakota is a small town with only 24 residents. Recently, the town has been targeted for takeover by a group of neo-Nazis, who are trying to make it a haven for white supremacists. According to NPR, white supremacist Craig Cobb has already purchased 12 properties, and has given most of them to other white supremacists. Cobb has said he wants to fly flags of the “formerly white nations of Europe” over the town:

“It would be extraordinarily beautiful when people enter the town, particularly at night,” Cobb says. “We will probably have the National Socialist hunting flag with stag horns and a very small swastika in the center — very discreet.”

Native women gain better access to emergency contraception–but still not enough

While women of color may receive more counseling on emergency contraception, they certainly don’t always have access to it when they do need it. From the age restrictions that were finally lifted after a court order to pharmacists who spread misinformation or refuse to stock the drug, we know is still not as easy as it should be to get your hands on some EC in many places. And for many Native American women, it’s been all but impossible. As MoJo explained last year:

Louise Erdrich becomes first American Indian woman to win National Book Award

Erdrich’s book, The Round House, is about violence against American Indian women, and about one young man who confronts that violence when it finds its way into his home.

According to CBS News,

A clearly delighted and surprised Erdrich, who’s part Ojibwe, spoke in her tribal tongue and then switched to English as she dedicated her fiction award to “the grace and endurance of native women.”

Only fifteen or so women have won the adult fiction prize since 1952, and Erdrich is the first American Indian woman to ever win it. “This is a book about a huge case of injustice ongoing on reservations,” she said. “Thank you for giving it a wider audience.”

Native American students protest racist anti-choice posters in New Mexico

Wow. We’ve seen horribly racist anti-choice ads targeting African American and Latina women in recent years, but this might take the cake. Native American students at the University of New Mexico organized a protest after graphic anti-abortion posters popped up on campus that read “Abortion Extinction. Today, an Indian boy was killed the Indian way. Hey ya hey!”

A representative for 40 Days for Life denied that the posters were associated with the group. At the student protest, signs read, “Racism is not pro-life” and “We will not be used to further your political purpose.”
