Happy Freedom to Marry Day, Minnesota!

As of the very first minute of this morning, same sex couples can get married in the great state of Minnesota. Late last night, many gay couples gathered at Minneapolis City Hall, ready to get married as soon as it was legally possible. Here’s one such couple, Emily and Kristina Kritkausky.Mazel tov, Emily and Kristina, and mazel tov to the whole state of Minnesota. Feels good to be on the right side of history, doesn’t it?

Big gay victory celebration in Minnesota

Check out this wonderful, cockle-warming video, taken from inside the war room of Minnesotans United for All Families, on election night. Minnesota voters were given the chance to write discrimination against LGBT Minnesotans into the state constitution. Minnesota’s gay marriage amendment, unlike those in Maine, Maryland, and Washington State, was a chance for voters to say “no” to restricting rights rather than saying “yes” to broadening rights. Minnesotans said “hell no” to reserving marriage rights just for straight people.

MN school district investigated for anti-LGBT anti-bullying policy

Anoka-Hennepin School District in Minnesota is one of many districts in the country that has what they call a “neutrality policy” in their anti-bullying rules when it comes to LGBT students — in other words, they ignore them. But considering the district has also experienced seven student suicides in less than two years, this policy may be much more problematic than that.

This is why the U. S. Justice Department and the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights is in the process of an investigation into the district to further research what they report as “allegations of harassment and discrimination […] based on sex, including peer-on-peer harassment based on not conforming to gender stereotypes,” reports ...
