Remembering why redefining masculinity is important

Much of the work I’ve done here at Feministing has been an attempt to unpack the oppressive nature of our current constructs of masculinity. Sometimes this means discussing the ways in which defining masculinity around dominance, violence, coercion, and invulnerability limit the identities and expression of men who are beholden to this definition.

Friday Feminist Fuck Yeah: #AllMenCan

In the aftermath of the Isla Vista killings, as the MRA scum of the internet have come out to defend Rodger’s worldview if not his actions and a disturbing number of ostensibly non-sexist men have tried to downplay the role of misogyny in his crimes, #yesallwomen became a robust and cathartic rallying cry. Now, Elizabeth Plank from PolicyMic offers #allmencan as space for men who are also tired of misogyny to show that the #notallmen contingent doesn’t speak for them.

New Favorite Tumblr: Saving Room For Cats

It turns out we’ve been wrong. The well-documented phenomenon of men taking up too much space on the train as if to air out a particularly large set of balls that has enraged women since time immemorial (or at least since the invention of public transit) is not, in fact, about a gendered sense of entitlement to fill up public space or a performance of masculinity.

There is actually a perfectly reasonable explanation: they’re just saving room for cats. Very large cats.

On behalf of feminists everywhere, our sincerest apologies to all sprawling men and their furry friends.

More after the jump.

Friday Feminist Fuck Yeah: Senior Male Athletes at Phillips Andover

Phillips Academy Andover, more commonly known as Phillips Andover,  is a prestigious and highly selective boarding school in Andover, Massachusetts whose students are known more for the high acceptance rates to elite and ivy-league universities they enjoy than for feminist activism. The high school’s Wikipedia page (yes, it has a long and elaborate one, having been established in the damn 1700’s), for example, boasts that “in recent years, Andover has sent the largest number of its students to Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Penn, Columbia, Princeton, and other top-tier colleges ...

New Favorite Tumblr: Flip The News

Check out Flip The News, a tumblr that flips the gender or race of the subjects in news articles. The site explains, “The point here is to shine some light on the way news organizations write about people and strive for more balanced, respectful narratives.” In one of the first posts, the author gender-flips this Atlantic article on childless women who search for surrogate children to mother. As you might imagine, it’s pretty impossible to imagine the gender-fliped one actually running.

Alan, 46, of New York City found an outlet for his unconscious desire to nurture closer to home. Like many men his age, he had a moment when he realized that kids were absent ...

The Wednesday Weigh-In: Male birth control edition

It’s no secret that dudes love to talk about hormonal birth control. But until now, their more direct involvement, namely, being able to take it themselves to effectively prevent against unwanted pregnancy, has been somewhat limited, as there are no options for male hormonal birth control out there just yet.

Well to all my sistas tired of being the only ones to shoulder the burden of taking hormonal birth control, Christmas may have come early this year. The LA Times is reporting that a method of birth control targeted for men is showing some strong potential:

“A birth control gel for men sharply lowered sperm counts with few side effects, researchers reported Tuesday. The gel, containing ...

Men Who Trust Women

Everywhere you turn these days, people are talking about reproductive freedom.

From the uproar over the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation pulling its funding from Planned Parenthood to the GOP frontrunner warning of “the dangers of contraception,” a lot of people in America are talking about a woman’s right to decide if, when and with whom she has a baby.

A lot of those people believe that a woman should not have the right to make that choice. And a lot of them are men.

In the past few weeks, women’s voices have been glaringly absent from the conversation about women’s health. When the House Committee on Congressional Oversight convened a hearing to talk about the fact that the ...

Men’s sheds: because blokes have feelings, too

I’m home in Sydney for a few weeks, visiting family and enjoying the crisp early spring after a long, sweaty New York summer.

Last week I opened our local paper to find an article about a plan to build and open a men’s shed in my suburb. What is a men’s shed? you’re probably asking if you’re not one of our many Australian readers. (If you are one of our many Australian readers, you might be bored by my explanation of men’s sheds, so please go watch this video of a baby wombat while I break things down for all those Feministing folks not lucky enough to live in the Land of Plenty).
