Emma Watson calls on men to make gender equality their issue too

As a member of the Harry Potter generation, it made me more emotional than I care to admit to see Hermione Granger Emma Watson call for the world to unite to defeat Voldemort gender inequality.

Watson, who is the newest U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador, spoke at the UN this weekend to launch the “HeForShe” campaign,” which aims to mobilize men and boys as advocates for ending gender inequality. She extended “a formal invitation” to men to make gender equality their issue too.

Watch: High school boys talk about why they are feminists

In my opinion, the only thing more tiresome than a conversation about women identifying as feminists is one about men doing so. But after Pharrell said he doesn’t “think it’s possible” for him to be a feminist since he’s a dude — and in the wake of #notallmen, #yesallwomen, and #allmencan — The New York Times is (as always) asking the tough obvious questions: “Is it possible to be a male feminist?”

In the aftermath of the Isla Vista killings, as the MRA scum of the internet have come out to defend Rodger’s worldview if not his actions and a disturbing number of ostensibly non-sexist men have tried to downplay the role of misogyny in his crimes, #yesallwomen became a robust and cathartic rallying cry. Now, Elizabeth Plank from PolicyMic offers #allmencan as space for men who are also tired of misogyny to show that the #notallmen contingent doesn’t speak for them.

Photo of the Day: French schoolboys wear skirts to protest sexism

In what looked like one of the most fun anti-sexism protests ever, hundreds of male students from 27 schools in Nantes, France, donned skirts to school last week to show their support for gender equality. The kids thought up the “Lift the Skirt” campaign themselves, which won the backing of the education ministry — and, predictably, the condemnation of right-wing groups. Kids could opt not to wear a skirt and instead show their support with a sticker reading “I am fighting against sexism, are you?”

One million men, one million promises to help end gender-based violence

Our own Zerlina is still getting rape threats from conservatives who apparently think suggesting men can end sexual violence is the very height of stupidity. Meanwhile–over in the reality-based community–a global movement of men doing just that is growing.
