Two Months After Trump Withdrew DACA, This Is Where the Program Stands

It’s been exactly two months since Trump rescinded the DACA program, which granted work permits  to hundreds of thousands of immigrants. Upon rescinding the program, Trump suggested it was up to Congress to come up with a legislative solution to DACA before March 5, 2018 (the date when the first work permits are set to expire and hundreds of people become eligible for deportation). Here’s where the program stands today and how you can join the fight to defend DACA.

Under No Circumstances Should Border Wall Funding Be Part of a DREAM Act

Last week, Trump ended Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), a program that protected eligible undocumented youth from deportation and provided them with renewable U.S. work permits.

Undocumented youth demand the New York DREAM Act

Yesterday, I was part of an action coordinated by the New York State Youth Leadership Council, and undocumented youth-led organization, to demand that Governor Cuomo prioritize the passage of the New York State DREAM Act. The Act would give undocumented young people access to state financial aid, which is crucial to education access in the face of quickly rising tuition costs.

As allies to undocumented youth, Marco Galaviz and I were arrested during a sit-in and banner-drop in front of the Governor’s office. From my statement yesterday:

I am doing this today because I am a reproductive justice activist, and I know that education impacts access to health care. I am doing this today because I am queer, and I ...

Hospitals are deporting undocumented immigrants while they are unconscious

This is really sickening. The AP is out with an incredible report detailing the stories of undocumented immigrants who were deported by American hospitals, while they were unconscious.

Two of the immigrants profiled, Jacinto Cruz and Jose Rodriguez-Saldana, were unlucky enough to be involved in car accidents and their punishment was being flown to Mexico while still in a coma.  The kicker is, they had health insurance, because they had solid jobs, but without documentation proving legal immigrant status, the hospital took it upon themselves to deport Cruz and Rodriguez-Saldana.

Via Talking Points Memo:

The men had health insurance from jobs at one of the nation’s largest pork producers. But neither had legal permission to live in the U.S., nor was ...

Supreme Court: We heart racial profiling!

Today, the Supreme Court ruled on Arizona’s controversial SB 1070 immigration law. The good news is that it struck down key parts of the law, which is  why it is being hailed as a victory for the Obama Administration, which brought the case to the Supreme Court. The bad news is that it upheld the “show me your papers” part  that encourages racial profiling, which is why Governor Jan “Finger” Brewer is praising the ruling as a victory.

Leslie Berestein Rojas at Southern California Public Radio (KPCC) lays out what the ruling does:

Strikes down Section 3, which would make it a state crime for undocumented immigrants not to carry an alien registration document. Strikes down Section 5(C), which would make ...
