Beyond Trump and Clinton: What’s at Stake On This November’s Ballot?

It’s hard after last week’s debate (or after the past six months) to imagine there’s anything at stake in the polls this November other than stopping the inevitable apocalypse that would await us should Donald Trump win (or lose, for that matter). But, in truth, there’s a lot more at stake on your ballot than your choice of Commander-in-Chief. And we’re here to help.

chart of birth control methods used by women

Chart of the Day: Why aren’t condoms and vasectomies covered under Obamacare?

When Obamacare required that all forms of birth control be fully covered with no out-of-pocket costs by insurance, it was a huge boon to Americans’ reproductive health. Except that it doesn’t actually cover all methods.

Awesome professor live-tweets her kid’s abstinence sex education class

Alice Dreger, a professor of medical humanities and bioethics, recently sat in on her kid’s abstinence-based, fear-based sex education class. She live-tweeted her incensed reactions to the teachers’ warnings that premarital sex will lead to all sorts of doom and gloom, that condoms are riddled with holes, and that you should wait until you find a girl who says “no” and put her on a pedestal.

Take Action: Ban the use of condoms as evidence of prostitution in New York

Despite the fact that condoms are widely held as essential tools in HIV and STI prevention – as well as being a very effective non-prescription method of birth control – just carrying condoms could get you arrested.

That’s right: As we’ve covered before, in New York and other places in the United States, condoms are routinely used by the police as evidence that the folks they are stopping are engaging in prostitution. If this seems impossibly nonsensical to you, it’s because it makes no sense, but unfortunately for everyone common sense is not the main driver of public policy.

Porn, Condoms, Feminism, and other internal conflicts

Many people who know me, know that I love (some) porn. And not just to get off. I’m the kind of girl who will curl up with a bag of popcorn and watch porn with friends. But that doesn’t negate the fact that like many feminists, I have some issues. There is a discourse to be had around the kind of public sex people have; and as always, a critical analysis is always key.

It is not a secret that many feminists have pointed out the “woman problem” within the porn industry. The images depicted in mainstream porn have become more and more hostile towards women. When you examine the role of women of color in the porn industry, it gets worse ...

Condom searches are being used to profile sex workers

You may remember the feminist blogosphere talking about laws that said carrying condoms could get you arrestedA new report from Human Rights Watch examines the issue: sex workers and people profiled as sex workers, especially trans women, are being targeted by the cops with condom searches in Prostitution Free Zones. This puts sex workers at risk, as they’re then reluctant to carry condoms. From the report:

In four of the nation’s major cities—New York, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, and San Francisco—police stop, search, and arrest sex workers using condoms as evidence to support prostitution charges. For many sex workers, particularly transgender women, arrest means facing degrading treatment and abuse at the hands of the police. For immigrants, ...
