Alice Dreger, a professor of medical humanities and bioethics, recently sat in on her kid’s abstinence-based, fear-based sex education class. She live-tweeted her incensed reactions to the teachers’ warnings that premarital sex will lead to all sorts of doom and gloom, that condoms are riddled with holes, and that you should wait until you find a girl who says “no” and put her on a pedestal.

Take Action: Ban the use of condoms as evidence of prostitution in New York

Despite the fact that condoms are widely held as essential tools in HIV and STI prevention – as well as being a very effective non-prescription method of birth control – just carrying condoms could get you arrested.

That’s right: As we’ve covered before, in New York and other places in the United States, condoms are routinely used by the police as evidence that the folks they are stopping are engaging in prostitution. If this seems impossibly nonsensical to you, it’s because it makes no sense, but unfortunately for everyone common sense is not the main driver of public policy.

Condom searches are being used to profile sex workers

You may remember the feminist blogosphere talking about laws that said carrying condoms could get you arrested. A new report from Human Rights Watch examines the issue: sex workers and people profiled as sex workers, especially trans women, are being targeted by the cops with condom searches in Prostitution Free Zones. This puts sex workers at risk, as they’re then reluctant to carry condoms. From the report:
