Marriage Equality in Maine and New Jersey

The fight for marriage equality is gearing up in two states this fall, Maine and New Jersey.

Maine’s legislator and governor recently passed a law legalizing marriage equality is a legal right for all residents, regardless of sexual orientation. Unfortunately, the anti-equality forces were able to place an initiative on the ballot that would reject this law. Maine’s No on 1 campaign is fighting by raising money and seeking volunteers to talk to voters about why they should vote against this Question. If you live in Maine and want to volunteer, or even if you don’t live there but can spare a donation, please click here. The election is Nov. 3, so we don’t have much time.

New Jersey’s situation is different. The state offers civil unions to GLBT couples, but as we all know that’s not the same as marriage. So advocates are campaigning to have elected officials pass a marriage equality law this fall. If you live in New Jersey, please contact your representatives asking them to vote for marriage equality. Even if you don’t, you can still help by donating to the campaign here.

If we all pull together, we can make marriage equality a reality!

1st Annual Nationwide You-Are-Loved Chalk Message Project

One of my college friends is starting a nationwide You-Are-Loved Chalk Message project for college and high school campuses, after it was so successful at our alma mater (Drew University,  holla!).  It’s intended as a positive event for the GLBTQ community, but I think the message of acceptance and love for everyone speaks to the feminist community at large.  Please read this message from her and spread the word!

Quick Hit: 2009 Female Mechanics Calendar

What a wonderful idea – photographer Sarah Lyon is selling 2009 Female Mechanics Calendar featuring photos and profiles of female mechanics. It’s inspiring to see women succeed in a traditionally male field, and a great feminist alternative to more girly calendars (which all seem to feature puppies and babies).

No on Proposition 8

I was shocked to read today that the supporters of proposition 8, the ballot initiative which would take away the right of gays and lesbians to marry in California, are ahead by 4 points.  How are they doing this?  By running fear-mongering ads, funded by wealthy homophobic supporters like the Mormon church.  Gay marriage is a right, granted by the California supreme court, and we can not let it be taken away from us.

If you live in California or know someone who does, please do whatever you can to defeat this proposition – vote against it, talk to your neighbors, write letters, even call or canvass other voters.  And even if you don’t live in California, please donate money to ...

Feminist Organizations

Hi!  I’m hoping some of the fabulous members of the Feministing community can help me out.  I’m currently looking for a new job, and I’d love to work for a women’s organization.  Does anyone have any suggestions for organizations I can target, or possibly even job search portals that specifically focus on feminist jobs?  I’m using Idealist, which is great for finding nonprofit jobs, but it’s not the most comprehensive site (and in this economy, I need all the help I can get!)  Thanks in advance for all your help!

New Approach to Domestic Violence

On my way to work this morning, I heard a radio piece about a new domestic violence program in Brooklyn and thought it worth sharing with the Feministing Community.  Transcript can be found here.

Men who have been convicted of domestic violence may be ordered to attend a "Domestic Violence Accountability Program" for 6 months as an alternative to serving jail time.  The program looks at domestic violence as the outgrowth of extreme sexism (although I would call it misogyny) and tries to tackle the abusers’ attitudes towards and ideas about women.  So, the sessions are run by both a woman and a man, so the abusers see a woman in an authority position.  The men are challenged when they ...
