Announcing Blog for Fair Pay Day 2010

April 20th will mark Equal Pay Day–the point in 2010 when the average woman’s wages finally catch up with what the average man earned in 2009.

And on that day, we’re asking bloggers and tweeters to raise their voices in support of fair pay for women by posting about this crucial issue on Equal Pay Day. Please sign up to Blog for Fair Pay, and help us spread the word! Last year, more than 160 bloggers took part in Blog for Fair Pay Day 2009. You can check out their posts here.

The theme for this year’s Blog for Fair Pay Day is, “What would it mean if there weren’t a $10,662 wage gap?” You can use this theme as a starting point to discuss what you could do with a pay increase of $10,662–the average gap in wages for men and women. You can sign up for Blog for Fair Pay Day on April 20th by visiting http://action.nwlc.org/blogforfairpay. You can also download a graphic for your post, or embed the #fairpay Twitter widget.

Here is some more important information to keep in mind as you’re writing your blog post:

When President Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act into law last year, it restored the right to hold employers accountable in court for wage discrimination. But significant as it is, the fight for pay equity is not over. Women still only make 77 cents ...

To Ms. Tebow at the Super Bowl: You Had a Choice

Written by Megan Tackney, Program Associate,
National Women’s Law Center
We would like to give Ms. Tebow a one-person-in-a-quiet-room round of applause for having the opportunity to make the choice that was right for her.
Recently, CBS has found itself front and center in a debate over an ad about abortion to be run during the Super Bowl by the controversial organization, Focus on the Family. The ad features Pam Tebow, mother of football player Tim Tebow, talking about her decision to continue her pregnancy even after doctors told her that her life was in danger if she went through with the pregnancy.
Ms. Tebow had an important decision to make that many women face every day. Provided with her ...

Abortion and Health Care Reform: How The House Bill Forces Women to Accept Less Coverage Than They Already Have

Last week it seemed that a compromise had been reached between abortion rights supporters and opponents. The compromise was based on the idea that health reform is so important that no one would try to use a single controversial issue as an excuse to bring the whole thing down. So, language was drafted that would sustain the status quo on abortion; no federal funding, but people could still use their own money to buy insurance that would cover them. But just hours before the final vote on the House reform bill, anti-abortion Democrats threatened that unless they got new restrictions on abortion rights they would vote against health reform. Here’s the breakdown:

The compromise: Under the language currently in the ...

Being a Woman Is Not a Pre-Existing Condition

Written by Judy Waxman, Vice President for Health and Reproductive Rights,
National Women’s Law Center

I don’t deserve health care that meets my needs.
I shouldn’t demand fairness in my health care coverage.
I can’t do anything about it anyway.

That’s what the health insurance profiteers want you to think.

They aren’t thinking about the mother who is struggling to find insurance because she had a Caesarean section. Not the woman who survived domestic violence and now must face rejection by an insurance company for having a so-called “pre-existing condition.” Not the woman who pays more than a man for the same health coverage, even when maternity care isn’t covered.

Being a woman is NOT a pre-existing condition.

Watch the video and take ...

Thank You Letter to Anti-Choice & Anti-Reform Friends

by Thao Nguyen, Outreach Manager, National Women’s Law Center

Dear Anti-Choice & Anti-Reform Friends,

Can I begin by thanking you for so often being the same people? It makes it so much easier to not have to read twice the number of inflammatory blog posts and articles on the internet. You have so conveniently gone from one bad argument to another, melding the anti-reform and anti-choice messages so seamlessly into one incoherent mistruth – it’s just made it really easy for me to keep up by not expecting your claims to be based on any facts. This has been an amazing time saver allowing me to spend more time on taxing projects like watching the previous seasons of

Asking the Big Health Insurers About their Finances Before Enacting Health Reform Seems Right to Me

by Lisa Codispoti, Senior Advisor,
National Women’s Law Center

Besides the US Chamber of Commerce, anyone out there feeling at all bad about the US House Energy & Commerce Committee asking large national health insurers about their finances? Certainly not I, especially after what we learned about the Wall Street bail out and big institutions that received billions in federal bailouts who in turn were handing out bonuses and continuing with other corporate spending that certainly raised the eyebrows – and ire- of the American public. Various health reform proposals will no doubt have a financial impact on the insurance industry (ie: by imposing a requirement that all people obtain health insurance and providing subsidies ...

History in the Making

by Marcia D. Greenberger, Co-President,
National Women’s Law Center

Cross-posted from Huffington Post.

This week, the Senate will make history – the kind of history that makes our country proud. When the Senate confirms Judge Sotomayor, she will become the first Latina, the first woman of color, and only the third woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. Judge Sotomayor is an extraordinary person, who combines exceptional academic and legal qualifications and an impressive tenure on the bench with an abiding commitment to public service and an inspirational life story.

The selection of this exceptional woman demonstrates how the nation can benefit from the talents and skills of women and people of color at all levels of ...

Women Small Business Owners Really Need Healthcare Reform

by Nancy Duff Campbell, Co-President,
National Women’s Law Center

Cross-posted from Reuters.

Insurance companies and others who profit from our broken health care system are mobilizing to defeat comprehensive reform by using misinformation and scare tactics. A prime example is the allegation that healthcare legislation – specifically the plan being considered by the House of Representatives – will hurt small businesses.

The fact is that small business owners, especially women, are already hurting under our current healthcare system. Leah Daniels, 29, is the owner of Hill’s Kitchen – a gourmet kitchenware store that opened last May not far from the U.S. Capitol. Daniels can’t afford to offer health insurance to her three employees. She purchased her own bare-bones plan on ...
