The Privilege of Pam Tebow’s Choice

We’ve all been reading and writing plenty about the FoF Super Bowl ad featuring Tim and Pam Tebow.  While there are many criticisms of CBS and how they are airing a probably anti-choice type of ad, while refusing to air the United Church of Christ ad and Mancrunch gay dating site ad, there are some issues that I haven’t seen enter the discussion.

Pam Tebow became pregnant with her fifth child while on a missionary trip in the Philippines.  She became infected with a pathogenic amoeba which put her in a coma and gave her dysentery.  The drugs which were used to rouse her and treat the life threatening diarrhea caused a massive placental abruption.  She chose to continue the pregnancy, despite the risk to her life and the high chance that her baby would be stillborn.  Fortunately, she and the baby both survived.

This is one of those classic stories about how miracles can happen and how you should never give up hope, but there is something missing.  What if things hadn’t turned out so well?  What if she had died and left 4 or 5 children with a single father?  Its probably safe to assume that Mr. and Mrs. Tebow discussed how they would manage in such a situation.  The family already got by on Mr. Tebow’s income, with Mrs. Tebow as a stay-at-home mom who home-schooled the kids.  Losing her would have been wrenching and difficult, but they probably could have gotten ...

My experience with some different methods of BC

I want to first start off by saying that my experiences aren’t universal.  The problems and benefits which I had with the birth control methods might not be the same for other readers.  These are just my experiences and thoughts, as well as advice as to what might make intercourse with these methods more pleasurable.

The week of Christmas, I went to visit my parents in Kentucky.  Unfortunately, I forgot to pick up my nuvaring prescription, meaning that I could ovulate even after I got back on track after coming home, due to the gap in hormone dosage.  My boyfriend was in town when I got back, and we didn’t want to abstain.  He has difficulty staying aroused while using male ...

Is “Lucy” feminist?

My boyfriend and I were having a discussion recently about "I Love Lucy", which is easily one of my favorite shows of all time.  We disagreed as to whether the show was an overall positive portrayal of women, or negative.

Considering that the show was produced in the 50s, when a married couple couldn’t even be shown in bed together and nobody ever said "pregnant" on tv, I feel that Lucy was had more feminist friendly aspects than not.  She was a very quick thinker, and rather rebellious.  She wasn’t content as a housewife alone, and wanted to get into show business.  Ricky usually tried to prevent her, which seemed somewhat unfounded.  Her horrible sounding voice was used for comedic effect, ...

Arkansas Families First needs help

In terms of proposals on ballots this election, California is getting much of the attention.  I certainly hope and pray that prop 8 is voted down, and I have donated what I can to it, but I’d also like to bring another proposed initiative going up for a vote.

In Arkansas, Act 1 on the ballot is a proposal to ban all unmarried people from being foster or adoptive parents.  This started a couple of years ago when a gay foster parent ban was struck down by the supreme court.  Soon after, legislators attempted to make it a constitutional amendment, which never passed.

Now John F. Thomas (I have no idea if his middle name actually begins with F, but there is ...

Antibiotics and Birth Control

A couple of weeks ago, I was on antibiotics for an ear infection.  It was just a standard Z-pack, two pills the first day and one pill every day after that.

My boyfriend came to visit me for the weekend and then went back to Memphis, where he lives.  A couple of days later, I was sitting at my computer and I looked over on my desk to see the unfinished Z-pack and a sudden horrible realization came to me.

"I can’t rely on my birth control while I’m on antibiotics!!!  Oh my God, I have to take EC.  We had sex without a condom more than three days ago, it might not work.  Oh my God, I can’t believe I forgot ...
